Steve Keim Gives Scouting Report on Johnson and Pace
Cardinals Area Scout Steve Keim sat down with azcardinals.com to share some of his scouting report on the Cardinals two first-round draft selections Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace.
What excites you about these two players?
Bryant is a big-play wide receiver who also has return ability so he fills two needs that the Cardinals had. He is a big-play threat and can return punts, which we also sorely needed. He can also fill the void that was left by David Boston at the receiver position. He’s explosive and is a big kid and in his personal workout, I timed him in the 4.39-4.40 range. He can go up high and is not scared to cross the middle. He is explosive and he can make big plays from anywhere on the field. Late in the season against Michigan State, he had an 81-yard punt return which is one of the better hilights I have seen all season as far as making people miss and taking it the distance. With that size and speed, that is something that is hard to find in college players. This guy has all of the tools to be successful at this level.
Calvin has tremendous athletic ability and physical upside. He has a chance to enhance our pass rush which we desperately needed and has a chance to be one of the better pass rushers in the NFL. He’s a guy that is certainly on the rise.
How would you describe these two guys as far as their character?
Calvin is a great kid. He went to Wake Forest which obviously, is held highly as one of the better academic institutions around the country. It is a private school with approximately 3,000 students and Calvin is a real smart kid who works hard. He’s got a lot of the things that you are looking for. He’s got all of his ducks in a row and is a good, young guy and we expect a lot of things from him. He’ll be good for the community and good for our locker room which is what our team needs.
Bryant is a no-nonsense type of guy. He is kind of a quiet guy. He’s tough and is very serious and goal oriented. He’s not a rah-rah guy—he’s just very driven from within and is also going to be good for our locker room.
What NFL player would you compare Pace too?
In terms of athletic ability and the way he moves on the field with a lot of fluidity, I’ve actually compared him to Simeon Rice. They both have that tall, angular, rangy build. He’s probably a little stronger against the run than Simeon was and with some coaching I think he’ll be there on that level with Simeon as far as being a solid pass rusher.
What NFL player would you compare Johnson too?
There really aren’t many guys that are that big and that fast and that physical. It is kind of a rare combination. Randy Moss is more of a finesse guy and is tall and angular and can run. This kid is more of a physical player like Boston. He’s also like Jevon Walker who was taken by the Green Bay Packers in the first-round last year. But, players with that kind of size, speed, and physical temperament for the position are really rare and hard to find and that is why he was our first-rounder.
Can you talk about their production throughout their careers?
Calvin was two sacks short of Michael McCrary’s sack record at Wake Forest. McCrary was known as one of the more prolific pass rushers in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens. Calvin had ten sacks as a junior and eight as a senior and still missed two games due to a leg injury, so his production as a pass rusher is what you look for in a college player and he’s certainly been productive.
Bryant was the go-to-receiver at Penn State with 917 yards on 48 receptions. He was a fourth-year senior who never red-shirted and is really loaded with potential to be the go-to-guy for the Cardinals. He is known for making acrobatic catches in a crowd. He is also a fabulous punt return as I said earlier.
I am very excited to have both of these guys are on our roster and I think they will be contributors.
