Cards make roster moves

Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that restricted free agent center NICK LECKEY has signed his one-year qualifying offer. In addition, the team has signed three free agents—defensive ends RODNEY BAILEY and JOE TAFOYA and cornerback RALPH BROWN—to one-year contracts. In accordance with club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Leckey (6-3, 291) appeared in 14 games last season for the Cardinals with 11 starts at center. He took over the starting role in 2006 against Chicago Bears on October 16 and started the final 11 games of the season. Originally the Cardinals sixth-round selection (167th overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Kansas State, Leckey has appeared in 44 games with 20 starts during his three seasons in Arizona.

Bailey (6-3, 305) appeared in 12 games last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and collected four tackles in a reserve role. Originally the Steelers sixth-round selection (181st overall) in the 2001 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Bailey played his first three seasons in Pittsburgh before being signed by the New England Patriots as a restricted free agent in 2004. He missed the 2004 season on injured reserve and appeared in eight games in 2005 with the Seattle Seahawks collecting 13 tackles and two forced fumbles. In 68 career games (one start), Bailey has collected 58 tackles (44 solos), 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Brown (5-10, 185) played in all 16 games (four starts) last season for the Cleveland Browns where he collected 37 tackles (22 solos) and nine passes defensed. Originally a fifth-round selection (140th overall) by the New York Giants in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Nebraska, Brown spent the first four seasons of his career with the Giants including in 2003 where he collected a career high 41 tackles (28 solos) and two interceptions while starting in seven games. Brown then spent two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2004-05) before signing with the Browns as a free agent in 2006. In 81 career games (13 starts), Brown has 140 tackles (104 solos), three interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Tafoya (6-4, 265) appeared in 13 games in 2006 for the Seattle Seahawks where he collected three tackles on defense and nine stops on special teams. A former University of Arizona product, Tafoya begins his second stint with the Cardinals after being with the team for six days during training camp in 2004. Originally a seventh-round choice (234th overall) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2001 NFL Draft, Tafoya played three seasons in Chicago after being released by Tampa Bay in 2001. In 2004, Tafoya spent time with the Falcons and played in 15 games for the Seahawks in 2005 season. In 63 career regular season games (two starts), Tafoya has 36 tackles (20 solos), 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

Finally an Arizona Wildcat on the Cards :)

Also Tafoya and Brown have a chance to make the team in my opinion.

Brown looks like a replacement for Robert Tate. An upgrade.

Typical camp depth. I wouldn't call them fodder though. Additional kickers and quarterbacks are fodder, though.

Of the three new guys, Brown looks like maybe he has a chance

Historically, the last CB on the roster has been a UDFA -- so at worst having a guy with 7 years of experience isnt a bad thing

I loved Brown when he came out in 2000 (drafted by Giants).

Listing a 6-3 305 lb dude as a "DE" does kind of signal that we're going to see a lot more 3-4 and mix & match enhancing our base 4-3 defense.

Brown has a shot to make the team

If I remember correctly, coming out of college the guy had one attribute and that was speed. Question, can he move fast to the rigth place? LOL

Some comments from another board about Brown .... not too promising ...

"Brown saw too much action in Cleveland's secondary last year due to injuries."

"HALLELUJA!!! Ralph Brown cost us more games last year. He HAS to be the worse player in the NFL of all time!!! He got burned more than my wife does my supper."

"Good riddance."

"good to know there is no chance of us resigning him"

"he had one good play all year....terrible......."

"Thank God! Goodbye Ralph Toast Brown!!!"

"That would be Ralph "Burnt Toast" Brown to you sir."

"Seriously, he came here on a moments notice and did slightly improve a little towards the end,, but not enough to make we want him back.."

"Well, Toast DID serve one useful purpose: his ineptitude led to Daven Holly getting more playing time which helped Daven get a lot better as the season progressed."

Its really all about competition at different positions. All of these guys have NFL experience. Undrafted rookie FA's are camp fodder. Not experienced veterans. Not with the Cardinals. The team is thin at every position but QB and WR.
