Got to be honest here. If it's only three years I have to ask who does three year deals anymore besides us? This is very dissapointing and I'm the one who always sees the glass half full, I'm mr. kool aid.

This is the most absurd post of your life............"in theory".......what the hell does that mean.......
Most teams only sign their lower round picks to 3 year contracts because after 3 years they become restricted free agents. So essentially you get the fourth year built in or at least you can get something for him if he signs somewhere else.

From KFFL:
The Baltimore Ravens have announced they have agreed to terms with rookie WR Devard Darling, the team's third-round selection, on a three-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Baltimore Ravens have announced they have agreed to terms with rookie LB Roderick Green, a fifth-round selection, on a three-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, reports the contract signed by Cleveland Browns rookie OT Kirk Chambers (Stanford), the team's sixth-round pick, was a one-year deal for $255,000. The deal also includes a $25,000 signing bonus.

WE AREN"T THE ONLY ONES DOING 3 YEAR CONTRACTS!

This is the new trend, shorter contracts for later round picks. A lot of teams are doing this, this year......hell, even Cleveland signed their 3rd round pick for one year.....it's a crap shoot......pay me now or "takes your chances"!

OK I will dumb it down for you.

the·o·ry ( P ) Pronunciation Key (th-r, thîr)
n. pl. the·o·ries

1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

To put in in laymens terms for you.

In theory after his contract is over in 3 years he can still be on our team if we give him a qualifing offer. It is a theory becuase it is based on facts used to predict the future.

..........no.......if we give him a qualifying offer, all that means is that we get something in return, should we decide not to match another teams offer. He still is available to negotiate with other teams after three years. Man I don't get your understanding of contracts.....you are living in a world of fairy tales.

Stepanovich is one of the top four that I wanted signed first and in camp. This is good news. Let's hope Dockett and Dansby will sign this week as well.

I love a good knock-down, drag-out brawl over contracts.
Especially the fourth rounder contracts. It's like our version of the Golden Gloves.

This is wrong. The Cards have almost always given three-year contracts to third-round-and-lower picks. Many teams do. This is a contract year for 2001 third-round pick Adrian Wilson, who was tendered the "high" offer. On the other hand, 2001 second-round pick Mike Stone is playing out the final year of his contract, as it second-rounder Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Some teams are trying to foist five-year contracts on their lower-round picks, but agents are resisting it. I think that Philly is one of the teams trying to weasel that extra year.

SECTION 11,

I'm sorry to inflict my "anger" on the board regarding joeshmo and his posts on contracts.......but he really doesn't paint the true story when it comes to salary cap and other CBA specifics. I'm sure he is a "fine fellow", but it is important to know of "which you speak".

Oh, and please don't promote Derek Sproules as our RB pick next year.....he's onlt 5'7" and 170 lbs. ;) ;) ;)

The new TV contract in 2006 will make the salary cap go up. That's why three year deals are popular this year.

We need Fitzgerald signed for 6 years. The rest could be tough to sign for more than 3 IMO.

I did not know this. Thanks, it used to be a given that you want longer deals to protect your investments. How many players take 2-4 years just to come around. On the other hand the average playing time of pro football players I believe is only 4 years.

I believe that the average tenure of a player in this league is like 2 years. Agents only want 3 year deals, not the teams. 3 or 4 year contracts for lower rounders mean more money if the player hits. A five-year contract guarantees a fifth-round pick nothing.

If the Cards were angling for 5-year deals for their low-rounders, the three-year deal that Step got is bad news.

Something like 90% of players signed in rounds 4-7 last year signed 3 year deals. This is not something new. It's been happening for years.

As for 1st and many 2nd rounders they typically sign for 5-7 years.

Um you just proved my original point.

Do you actual read what I post or just like to sound off just for the sake of sounding off.

I said, "he can still be" on the team. Hence the use of the word theory( do I need to explain what that means again because you seem to not grasp what it means), becuase if it was a lock that Step would be on the team I would have said he will be on the team of which I didnt.

Learn to read then comprehend before you post.

In a totally unrelated matter...

Section 11, that is a sweet cardinal logo! We're suppose to be getting some twists on our uniforms for the new stadium...hopefully it will look something like that (although, I've got nothing against the current logo either).
