Now, however, all rookie deals are slotted, making true negotiations a thing of the past. Even with a player like Mathieu, who had other issues at play that needed to be factored in, signed quickly. Last year, the Cardinals had all of their draft picks under contract by June 11.

Reports are that we agreed to the full guaranteed money at his slotted draft position, but are breaking up the money over the contract and it's not guaranteed if he's cut for drugs.

Mathieu, drafted by Arizona in the third round of April's draft, signed a four-year deal that includes a fully guaranteed signing bonus worth $662,500, league sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.

The contract as structured does provide annual incentives to Mathieu if he performs and avoids off-field issues. Those are in the form of annual guaranteed roster bonuses paid if he is on the team on specified dates, the source said.
