Mike Martz?

Cardinals Offense-TM- Cardinals Feb. 8 - 1:13 pm et

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat hears that the Cardinals recently asked the 49ers for Mike Martz's cellphone number.

Maiocco admits it's only a rumor and hasn't been able to confirm it, but Arizona has an opening at offensive coordinator and Martz is a free agent. Hiring Martz definitely wouldn't hurt their chances of keeping Kurt Warner.

I thought that relationship ended badly.

Plus, Martz is the anti-whiz.

No way in hell is Martz the Cards next OC. No way.

If Warner and Martz are so close, why would the Cardinals ask the 49ers for Martz's cell number instead of Kurt?

Really good point. It would also be a way to get KW's input on working with Martz again.

Unless there is some etiquette thing in the NFL about how a team is suppose to contact an exemployee.

IMHO say NO to Martz.

Martz would be a great choice.

He's a good OC who's had zilch to work with since the last time he was a good one.

Detroit and the 49ers are hardly exmples of having lethal weapons and as a HC he just stinks but as an OC he's more than capable.

this is silly

the quickest way to get in contact with Mike Martz is to call his agent -- Bob Lamont (who I found in a 4 second Google search)

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat why the Cardinals recently asked the 49ers for Mike Martz's cellphone number.

Maiocco admits it's only a rumor and hasn't been able to confirm it, but Arizona Coach Whisenhunt has been receiving mystery text messages saying things such as, "Hey Coach, hire me as your OC. I use to be good one once just like Kurt Warner and look at him now." Coach Whisenhunt then called the 49ers to see it the cell phone number was Mike Martz's cellphone number. I was and a restraining order has since been filed.

The argument against Martz is that he was the one responsible for Warner's 2003 benching. That left a bad taste in his mouth. If any of you want Kurt to return for next season, hope that this doesn't happen.

Also, I think Whis's next choice for OC will have a more balanced attack to try to get away from being one dimensional. OF course, that all depends on the personell we get in draft/FA.

IMO - Kurt Warner goes into retirement if this happens... (so it won't)

The relationship did end badly and is even worse between Martz and Brenda who had a feud at the end.

Martz doesn't at all fit what Whiz wants. Won't happen.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
Ooohhh, we could get Martz and Schottenheimer and make them Co-Offensive Coordinators... Call it Marty-Martz Ball.

At least the sidelines would be entertaining to watch during the games.

Martz - no. Just. No.

Why is anybody bringing Martz's name up? Seriously, why?

Every passing offense isn't the same. They have different philosophies, different terminologies, and different approaches. Martz's offense is rooted in the schemes of Sid Gillman and Don Coryell. (Coryell should be familiar to old school Cards fans as the coach of 1970s Cardiac Cards.) Ken Whisenhunt's offense isn't. You can take Whisenhunt's offense and make it all pass-wacky like they did this year, but it still isn't the kind of Gillman/Coryell approach Martz uses.

Bring in Martz, and you've got a very successful offense having to step back and learn new terminology and new schemes. The only player who would be familiar with his system, Warner, is also quite fluent with what they've been running. Where's the advantage to be gained in taking a step back?

Add to that the personnel. Warner, sure. Leinart, actually, wouldn't be a bad fit, I don't think. But Fitz (and Boldin if he stays) aren't really good fits for an offense based on quick cuts and timing patterns. They could do it, sure, but it wouldn't fit their skills as well, and would really take away from what Fitz does best.

Whisenhunt is going to want someone who is going to run with the offensive philosophy he knows and is comfortable with. That's about a million times more important than what his late-30s QB accomplished 10 years ago with some guy with a different philosophy.

And that's all leaving aside the issue of Warner's strained relationship with Martz. It's just a bad, bad fit that's being talked up by people who don't understand the situation.

I think the obvious past between Warner and Martz is the biggest reason along with him being available.

But it isn't just the fans, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat(?) reported that the Cardinals contacted the 49ers to get his number.

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers...-at-ex-49ers-coaches-to-fill-vital-roles.html
The NFC West is in a state of flux.
The Rams and Seahawks have new head coaches (Steve Spagnuolo and Jim Mora, respectively). The 49ers awarded the permanent head-coaching job to Mike Singletary, who proved himself during his trial run over the final nine games of the season.

Even the Cardinals - winners of the NFC West and narrow losers a week ago in the Super Bowl - are not immune to dramatic changes.

The coach, Ken Whisenhunt, remains in place. But he will be hiring two new coordinators. Todd Haley, who ran the offense, is now Chiefs head coach. And Whisenhunt fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.

There are rumblings two recent 49ers discards could be hired to those top roles with the Cardinals.

File this one in the rumor category . . . but I've heard that the Cardinals called the 49ers on Friday to ask for the cell number of Mike Martz, whom Singletary fired two days after the season. I have not been able to confirm this happened, so take it for what it's worth.

So might Whisenhunt seriously consider Martz as the man to take over the offense? Might that help convince Kurt Warner to go ahead and sign a two-year deal to remain with the Cardinals? Certainly, the Cardinals' talent on offense would seem to be a better fit for Martz's offensive style than what he had last season with the 49ers.

Wouldn't that be great? Let's face it, the NFC West is a more enjoyable division when Martz is around.

And Billy Davis is considered a top candidate to replace Pendergast as defensive coordinator. Mike Nolan hired Davis to be 49ers defensive coordinator in 2005. But Nolan lost faith in Davis and began taking over most of the defensive-coordinator responsibilities. After two seasons, Davis was fired. He has spent the past two years as Cardinals linebackers coach.

This could get very interesting.

Wouldn't most of what you said be the case if they brought in any outside OC. The only way everything staying the same is to promote form within.
