Sounds like they are a little farther on than they usually are at this point. I still think Brown will miss some of camp. But, hopefully, it'll be a matter of days, not weeks.

I wonder why agents and teams wait until 2 weeks before training camp to start talks. You'd think they would get on it soon after the draft. I've heard all the things about vet contracts and money due that they have to get done before they sign rookies but it just seems that they could get it done a long time before camp

Its all a game of chicken.

For either side, why give your best offer when you arent missing anything (i.e. training camp).

Its why there will be a flurry of deals getting done starting tommorrow through Saturday. There are a ton of either Friday or Saturday reporting dates for most of the NFL.

I hope Graves learned somthing from that. As soon as the team revealed Cordon's demands to the press, it wasn't a problem signing him. Maybe Graves is too much of a good guy when it comes to rookie deals?

No one wants to be the first to sign in fear that they might get less money than the people around them. Now we're seeing some early picks get signed (#9 just signed), so this should all start picking up this week.

Whoever signs first will set the market. Giving Brown the same deal as the #4 pick last year plus 7% seems easy enough, but what if his agent is asking for 10 or 12 % more?
Do you just give him what he wants so the player is in camp on time? Or do you try to hold the line within your and the leagues structure.
Trurth is, if a player is not in camp on time, we really have no idea whos fault it really is.

True, especially since they'll get blasted in the press and on the 'net for taking a deal less than what others received. Of course then they get blasted in the press and on the net for being greedy.

I'll never forget how people kept talking about how contracts should be incentive laden instead of just giving unproven rookies so much money and then when Ricky Williams did exactly that the same people were all over how stupid he was to do it.

If you are t he only one doing it you are a dummy because everyone else is cashing in bigtime.

NFL should just start a slotting system, rookies should not make more than perrennial all pro players, period.
