The Ringer pod brought up Joe Hortiz being a disciple of Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta for 20+ years and he's likely molded to build a team thru a volume of picks. I believe Harbaugh is the ultimate decision maker but they won’t be picking top-5 again and could look at their draft position to restock a top heavy roster that’s got a lot of holes.

The question is would the Chargers accept the Vikings package minus the 25’ 1st rounder after we trade down? I think for sure they’d do #11, #23 and #35 for #5 but I’d shoot for #66 instead of #35. So we’re essentially trading a third for a first and still getting Marv. It might be an unofficial type agreement pre-trade but I don’t trust Harbaugh at all.

This is misstating the theory a bit. The argument is that there is less value and return drafting RBs in round 1, and paying them a huge 2nd contract. That is the argument. There is also less value investing higher draft picks or spending large contracts at RB if you are going to use a committee of players. You can find specialists all over.

Plenty of examples of quality teams using this strategy. Chiefs 1st round RB busted...later round RB very good. Ravens have a low investment into the RB position. The Bills are another example. There are more but that is the gist.

RB isn't without value, but you no longer have to invest premium picks or long term dollars to get that value.
Didn’t the ravens use a 2nd round pick on jk dobbins and the bills a 2nd on cook?

Even the Chargers fansites have them taking OL.

Chargers definitely need OL, no doubt.

I don't think they need to take OL at 5. They can most likely take OL in round 2. Someone like Rosengarten would be a fine RT for them at #36, or Blake Fisher in the 3rd.

I think I'd be surprised to see them take Alt and switch him to RT at #5 considering the gaping holes they have at WR and that Slater is entrenched at LT for many more years.

And as Dvontel said if all else fails they have Trey Pipkins who's an ok player, although I disagree he's better than Jonah Williams. When Slater went down in 2022 Jamaree Salyer played LT and looked very good. They moved him to RG last year but he was much better at tackle. Personally I'd put Salyer at RT going forward, he was a tackle at Georgia after all.

In fact, I think that might be their plan. They already have Corey Lindsey at starting C but signed Bradley Bozeman in FA. Bozeman was the Panthers C but he was a Left Guard at the Ravens. They have Zion Johnson at LG so would make sense for Bozeman to go to RG and Salyer to RT.

Chargers only have 4 receivers on the roster and 2 of them have 100 yards combined in 4 total seasons.

6’6 310lbs is “smallish?!?”
He's 6'4. But he doesn't play big like Alt does. He's not nearly as physical, his game is an extremely crazy game. There is reason he is being called maybe a guard and not a tackle.

I think he can be a tackle because he still has long enough arms and he's just so technically sound. Watch how good he redirects stunts, It's literally textbook. He'll also feint pass sets and redirects which completely destroys the pass rushers technique he uses. He's really smart.

Honestly, I probably have Fatanu as OL2 after looking at him more, but Alt can be so physically dominant that he easily gets the edge.

I get all this, but literally every OL they have was below average as a run blocker last year. It's hard to build a punishing run game with 5 bad run blockers.

Also, Alt is a prototype OT and has a higher ceiling than Slater does. Slater is also highly versatile and smart so he could excel at other OL positions.

Yeah - it would be one thing if we had a legit #1 WR and a deficit of draft capital. We have the opposite, so why not get what we need while still having plenty of draft capital?
We don't have plenty of draft capital. We have very few starters, we would need 20 picks in the first 2 rounds to have plenty of draft capital, even that might not be enough.

I think their poor run blocking last year is more a result of poor coaching / scheme / players that knew that era was over rather than ability.

Hmm so a bunch of guys who don't want it?

That's an even bigger reason to replace people.

Yeah out of the playoff teams last year (at quick glance) you have the: Lions, Packers, Ravens, Bills, Chiefs, Browns, Dolphins & Steelers who used a 1st or 2nd round pick on a RB in recent (~4) years plus the Niners who, though not drafting, gave lots of draft capital for CMC.

Teams that haven't include: Cowboys, Bucs, Eagles, Rams, Texans & Dolphins.

So about 50/50. As with most things in the NFL, there's no one way to build a team (outside of good QB play of course).

You're wrong.
We have very few starters
We have very few GOOD starters. We have plenty of guys that are questionable starters/rotational players. This was a choice.

Ha, ok.

The other teams part is interesting. For a QB the list is pretty much Giants, Vikings, Broncos, Raiders, and maybe Seahawks. Not sure if any team is interested in moving up for a OT or WR which are the only two other positions to really consider that high. I am curious if you have the names of those other teams. I have heard the Cardinals asking for a player for the 27th pick, but that is just a twitter story.

Between those two offers, Minnesota's has the most appeal unless Denver includes Surtain. Sutton isn't very appealing to me. Maybe Dallas is interested in moving up and wants to offer Lamb. The issue there is the value is lacking due to Lamb needing an ext. I wonder if Jaycee Horn could be acquired trading back from 27 (though Horn does not fit the durable profile).
I believe the Cards have talked with both the Giants and the Raiders. I don’t have a clue about the teams offering players and future picks.

Any moves off pick #4 have to take into account that the Cards will be looking for a new QB at this time next year. KM is not ‘the guy.’ The reason he is still being considered as such going into 2024 is the premature contract extension and salary cap hit it carries. If not for that contract, KM would have joined the mass exodus from the Cards.

The recent positive comments about KM from the Cards FO are ‘spin’ to elevate KM to play his best this season. Maybe he can stay healthy and put together a .500 season and the Cards can convince a QB-needy team to trade for him?

If the Cards see a QB they like at #4, they should take him now. Give the new QBOTF time on the bench—at least until KM gets injured or falters (and he will). Any players drafted now should be building blocks around the next QB, not KM. It looks as if the Cards are already doing this. Consider the run-blocking OL slowly being assembled. Consider that KM’s ‘guys’ that SK drafted/traded for at KM’s request are gone—Hollywood, Hopkins, Moore. Other players moved on via retirement or just to get out of town. Read that as their calculations that KM is not ‘the guy.’

The new coaching staff will want their choice under center—one who will fit their playbook. And that is only to be expected. Their careers are at risk once we get past the current honeymoon period and roster adjustment. Any trade down from #4 should hoard future high picks that we will need to get a top QB prospect next year.

Heard this on Florio this morning and his theory actually makes a ton of sense, for once.

Basically, it's the NFL may force a 1st round pick swap between Vikings and Falcons, due to tamper with Cousins. If that happens, it makes a trade for Vikings into the top 4 more palatable for a team like AZ that doesn't want to miss out on a top 3 receiver. So Cards could end up with 8, 23 and 27 in 2024 and Vikings 2025 1st or 2nd.
