I happened to be listening to the Afternoon Blitz on NFL Radio with Solomon Wilcots and Adam Schein today and they got talking about the NFC West.

They both asked each other who they picked to win the division and they both said the Cards. Wilcots said that he hadn't bought into the Cardinals hype in the past several years but thinks that it is warrented this year. He has Matt Leinart as his breakout player in the NFC this year.

He has previously stated that he thinks the NFL is a league of coaches and quarterbacks and the Cardinals finally have both. He said that he thinks Matt is one of the smartest quarterbacks to come into the NFL in a while.

He also said that he has had several conversations with coach Whiz and has been thouroughly impressed. He really likes what Whiz is trying to do on offense and explained why Levi Brown was at RT.

In his opinion Brown is the best blocking tackle to come out in a while and most teams like to run right so they have paired him with Deauce Lutiu to form a young dynamic blocking duo for a play action offense. He liked the Terrelle Smith signing and feels that Wells was moved to left guard because of his ability to pull.

He thinks that Grimm's ability to simplify the blocking schemes will help and he forsees running a lot behind Levi and Deauce with Wells pulling to the right side and Terrelle leading Edge into the hole. He thinks they are going to pound the ball at opponents on that right side.

He said that he had asked Whiz about how he hoped to overcome the losing mentality and Whiz told him that is why it is so important to be physical and to run the ball. He said he believed that you can have great skill position players but until the team can consistantly win the battle at the line of scrimmage they will always have that doubt in the back of their mind. When you can physically win those battles you start to breach that gap to thinking that you are dominating your opponent and can really win.

They think the offensive line is better because of addition by subtraction. Translated, they neither one think very much of Leonard Davis. They have stated before that they think he is lazy and unfocused and overpayed.

Again they really like Whiz and his coaches and they think Leinart is going to be a star. They believe for the first time that the Cards have very good coaches and a potenially great quarterback.

Awesome! Thanks for the re-cap.

Which hopefully means Edge getting to the 2nd level of the defense.

I hope Solomon is right (and suspect he is).

One thing keeps nagging at me, though. While Reggie Wells has shown he has the feet to be a decent pass blocker over at RT, he hasn't shown all that much as a run blocker. I have my doubts about his ability to pull from LG to lead the way on blocks to the right. How well he can execute this under Grimm's leadership will be something worth keeping an eye on.

Bump.

Great recap, peri...

Some of the personnel moves the Cardinals have made in the offseason can be head scratchers at first. But when you look at the whole picture and what Whisenhunt's plan is, then you can begin to see how it all fits together.

Great Recap.... Thanks

Hopefully Ross can hold the fort on the other side during those run plays.... This makes me feel a little better about the decision to move Wells to LG. I didn't see the logic in killing our QB, but in my mind, I can kind of see plays form.

If it works.... We could be pretty good.

I have waited patiently to see what Q & Fitz could do if they weren't doubled all the time. If our opponents have to put 7 or 8 in the box we might actually destroy our opponents.

And they are right about Matt's intelligence. He can slice up a defense if our running is productive.

It all starts with the O & D Line. I BELIEVE!!!

I too have concerns about Wells and his run blocking ... even though he was a decent pass blocker at RT he had no push off the line on run plays ... will he be able to handle big DTs on a consistant basis .. ?? that is a big concern ...

You know we are all skeptical but for the first time I am hearing some long time critics from the media have some good things to say about the Cards. I was listening to Bob Kemp the other day and he never has anything good to say about the Cardinals and he said he was very impressed with Whiz. He said he wasn't ready to drink the kool aid just yet but that he might be getting close. This is amazing as he never misses a chance to put down the Cards. He makes K9 look like an optimist. :)

Amen! Well put Coach!

This is why I still really believe the Cards need an indoor practice facility. Our linemen need to be ready to kick-ass on Sundays...not worn-down by the heat all week in practice. Go Cards!!!

While I think that there is legitimate concern about Wells' ability to run block we have to keep in mind that we have Mike Gandy in reserve. My understanding is that he played pretty well as an OG in Chicago, and not so well as an OT. Of course, this strategy is based on Oliver Ross being able to hold down the LT spot.

Your concern might be correct. If it is I am confidant that our sideline generals will see it and confirm it quickly and make changes. I do not believe our generals will be apologists for anyone and they will pull a guy out it he does not measure up either between the ears or physically. What we have here is a no nonsense group of very focused coaches.

I just got back from Pittburgh and it is something to see everyone still celebrating the "Stillers" Superbowl. For those of you never in "The Burgh", it is a beautiful city.

Heck, that city is still celebrating the Super Bowl wins from the 70's.

Regarding the city- Pittsburgh went from being a dirty, polluted, yet very wealthy industrial town, to a downtrodden, seamy city on the verge of implosion when the steel industry faltered, to an icon of urban renovation today. It is now an attractive, pleasant city of numerous corporate HQ's. They really have turned it around.

We might as well come up with a new strategy then.

The offseason is long, and I'm glad the sports journalists are serving up plenty of Kool-Aid to get me through it.

It is a beautiful city. I say this as someone born in Cleveland, and currently a Bengals fan (along with the Cards)--so that proves it really is something special.

It really is a jewel. I shudda' taken the time to find out a little of the history of the Honus Wagner Co. Sporting Goods Store. I wonder "how that came to be."

My son made me get out of the car on the Fort Dusquene Bridge to take a picture of him on the bridge with Heinz Field in the background.

No doubt, however it is a new system, with new leadership and new members of the line. As you know an offensive line is much more a unit than individual play. If our sideline mgt thinks he is the man, we will see him as a pulling guard, conversely if he can't get over the bar it ain't gonna happen.
