When a triumphant Medfield girls hockey team skated off TD Garden ice on Sunday after 10:30 p.m., the winter sports season ended.
But before we look ahead to improved weather, baseball/softball diamonds and lacrosse balls rippling into nets, let’s spring backward.
The final weekend of the season included Franklin’s boys hoop team winning the winter’s final game on the hardwood, which also served as the last game on the sidelines for Newton North’s Paul Connolly after 24 seasons.
This winter included eight 1,000-point scorers – likely a record for these parts – five individual All-States wrestling champions, three indoor team track and field titles and a Wayland boys swimming team champ.
For peak performances, we compiled 14 of them – and not all of them involved champions. Buzzer beaters (two by L-S!), overtime goals and wrestling duals are here for your viewing.
When we did this in the fall, more than 91,000 votes were cast. It was so popular, let’s do it again. Help us select the Highlight of the Winter. Vote below.
A quick refresher, in no particular order, in case you’re having trouble going back to a cold and snowy past few months:
We couldn’t have these two competing against each other for votes, so we packaged them together. Paul Conway, on Jan. 10, swished a foul-line jumper just before time expired in a home win over Concord-Carlisle.
Five weeks later, Nolan Martindale knocked down a shot in traffic to beat the buzzer in a victory to close the regular season at the Spartan Classic in Lynn.
Logan Keaney took an inbounds pass and nonchalantly flipped a shot over his shoulder that went off the glass and in to give Medway a 43-41 win over Norton on Valentine’s Day.
In their fourth visit to the finals, the Franklin boys basketball team finally broke through and won the title behind 31 points from Caden Sullivan. The 55-52 win over Newton North capped a 26-1 season.
Junior Phoebe Carroll drove the lane, hit a short runner and celebrated with her Hopedale teammates on Jan. 31. The basket gave helped her surpass 1,000 career points, a feat her mother, Cheryl, achieved in 1989.
In a first, the Framingham wrestling team took its act downtown on Jan. 29 to help the city celebrate its 325th birthday. The City Hall Showdown drew a packed house as the Flyers defeated Braintree 40-30.
After Medway tied the score late in the third period, Hudson didn’t blink. Jordan Sousa scored in the second overtime to give the Hawks a 3-2 playoff victory in Franklin, setting off a wild celebration with the Red Sea, aka, the Hudson student section.
During 3-on-3 play in double overtime against Pembroke in the Division 3 playoffs, Jack Gavron lifted Watertown/Wayland to a 4-3 victory over Pembroke. Gavron skated over the blue line, used a toe drag and a spin move to nutmeg a defenseman before faking out the goalie to flip in a backhander. He then dropped to his knees to celebrate with his teammates.
The same day Hudson survived on the ice, Milford senior Aidan Baum became one of two Scarlet Hawks to win All-States wrestling titles, along with Mikey Boulanger. Baum punctuated his win over St. John’s Prep’s James Lally at 144 pounds with a back flip.
With the season on the line, Patrick Madden led Hopedale to the state finals when he scored with 3.6 seconds left in a 57-56 win over Westport in the Division 5 Final Four in Taunton.
It wouldn’t be winter without another indoor track and field championship for the girls from Wellesley. In winning a pair of relays, the Raiders won their eighth in a row, out-pacing the field at Reggie Lewis Center by 15 points.
It came down to a dropped baton, but the Algonquin boys indoor team won its first state title. Miles Lipka scored 25 of the Titans’ 43 points, winning the 55 dash and the high jump while also placing fourth in the long jump.
Natick junior Emmanuella Edozien set the state record in the 55-meter hurdles during the Division 1 meet at Reggie Lewis Center. Her time of 7.96 seconds bested the old mark by 1/100th of a second.
Another buzzer beater. Framingham senior Allie Regan, another one of our 1,000-point scorers, sank a shot from half court just before the third quarter came to a close at Lincoln-Sudbury.
Forty seconds after Weymouth tied the score, Natick’s Alex Peck scored the game-winner with 1:25 left in a 5-4 playoff win at Chase Arena.
