I get the angst, though. In an FA period of no long-term hope, these signings will be met with pessimism. No one wants to pimp Cap Space for their team.

Not that it matters , but he wasn't signed, he was claimed. I can see why, vet that knows the coaches and his expectations. He can help teach some of the rookies along the way in camp, before he is cut...
