As the Boston Celtics continue their fight for the title of back-to-back champions, one player just won a title of his own.

Last night, Celtics guard Payton Pritchard was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year, marking the 27-year-old's first NBA award and the Celtics' fifth ever Sixth Man award. Pritchard beat out Ty Jerome of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Malik Beasley of the Detroit Pistons for the award, winning 82 out of 100 first-place votes.

Here's what Pritchard's newest title means.

Established in 1983, the Sixth Man of the Year is one of seven major regular season NBA awards, including most valuable player, most improved player and rookie of the year. The award celebrates the NBA's most valuable player from the bench, making him the "sixth man" after the five starting players on the court. Though Pritchard said earlier this season that he would not be campaigning for the award, he has proved himself on and off the bench over the past couple of years.

After being drafted to the Celtics in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft, Pritchard spent a lot of time on the bench. However, he showed himself as a key player during the 2023-24 playoffs, rising to popularity after hitting not one, but two half-court shots at the buzzer.

Pritchard has continued to prove himself as a valuable player this year, coming off the bench to play in every game of the 2024-25 season and becoming the player with the second-highest number of 3-pointers in Celtics history.
