I think the problem is the international court. It has a lane that is about as wide as the US court at the foul line but gets much wider down by the basket. It makes low post offense much more more difficult since the player has to get the ball so far from the basket. Rather than learning to back the guy down, they just step outside and shoot jump shots.

On defense, big players can simply stand in the lane without having to push oppoents away from the basket.

Another problem appears to be that the refs call fouls on minimal contact in Europe compared to the NBA, so there isn't the incentive to become strong as compared to being quick. The exceptions are all just immoble really big guys like Varnes (drafted and cut by the Knicks).

Huh?

The only differences are that the 3pt line is closer to the basket, there is no circle under the basket and you are allowed to play real zone defense.

I like Tiago Splitter A LOT! I think hes a good post player, he turned 19 20 days ago. The info in nbadraft.net is 2 years old, I remember reading it for the first time a while ago. Ever since, hes gotten much stronger (about 40 pounds of muscle) but is still young. He will be a PF/C.

Well, you know, some of those Euros are so thin in the shoulders--there's only so much weight they can put on. Surely a few 7-ft. Euro SFs can't hurt? ;)

Seriously, I've been hoping that Splitter was turning into a player. He seems like the only prospect this year that might possibly be a steal at #5 or #6 overall if that's where the Suns wind up.

If you see him, tell him not to work out for any of the other teams...

I always thought the key was made by angles lines instead of straight ones.

Sort of creating a really tall trapazoid.

It worked before.

Spitter is ranked #11 by HoopsHype and #9 by nbadraft.net; so he could be available when the Suns are up in the later lottery. I can't see him meeting the Suns needs, but he may be a "best player available" type choice.

They play on the international court like we've seen during the Olympics.

Yeah, but it almost makes no difference. I am not even sure it is that way on every court.

Since there is true zone defense allowed anyway, who cares where the paint is?

It makes a big difference. One reason that Voskuhl gets into so much foul trouble is that he cannot push big guys out of the paint. They get into the low post and can just turn and score. Adding just a few feet changes the shot a lot.

But you are right, pure zones do make a difference.

Maybe I am just dumb. :)

But it makes no difference if the area you are standing on is painted or not. The distance to the hoop is the same.

It does if you don't want 3 second calls made.

Based on my experience watching european basketball and NBA, there are almost no 3sec calls compared to the NBA.

And I would be that that isn't the reason that no more true centers are coming out because the US isn't producing them either.

Who would want to be a fat, ugly, 7' who stands around in the paint when you can be a 7' Kevin Garnett?

I'd love to learn more about how the Europeans play.

Watch games :)
I don't like it so I hardly watch unless I notice that there is a potential draft prospect playing.

Currently there are no prospects in the german league I think except Nikagbatse who clearly has the talent but not the mentality.
