Wilson Central completed a two-game District 7-4A sweep of Lebanon with a 9-3 win at the Blue Devils’ Brent Foster Field on Wednesday.
The Wildcats held a 4-3 edge before breaking it open for the second straight night in their last at-bat, scoring five in the top of the seventh inning.
Nic Ferrara and Colton Vivrette hit RBI singles sandwiched around a run-scoring double by Cohen Crocker. Two more runs scored on an error.
Central built a 4-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings. Konnor Adelsberger had an RBI groundout in the first, Vivrette and Brady Schafer RBI singles in the second and a passed ball in the third.
The Blue Devils battled their way back with two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fifth to draw to within 4-3 as Carter McPeak drove in two runs.
Schafer pitched the final four innings and was awarded the win. He allowed a run on four hits and no walks while striking out five. Starter Mason Lee gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with four punchouts in three frames.
Starter Samuel Peach worked the first three frames and took the loss. He and two relievers gave up seven hits and seven walks while fanning 11. They were also victimized by six errors.
Vivrette drove in two runs on two singles for Central. Crocker’s double represented the Wildcats’ only extra-base hit.
McPeak, Evan Driver and Brody Royalty doubled for the Blue Devils. Royalty and Jordan Jewell had two hits apiece.
Wildcats hold off Blue Devils in series opener
GLADEVILLE — Wilson Central broke a late tie with six runs in the sixth inning and visiting Lebanon could only get half of that back in the seventh as the Wildcats held off the Blue Devils 9-6 in the District 7-4A series opener Tuesday night.
The Wildcats broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth as they collected six runs on five of their nine hits. Mason Tinnell’s two-run single was the big blow.
Central took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Carter Spencer, scoring his twin brother Reid, and a balk which plated Konnor Adelsburger.
Lebanon got a run back in the second inning and pulled into a tie in the fourth on Evan Driver’s single to center field.
But Central quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Reid Spencer’s RBI single.
Back-to-back doubles by Carter McPeak and Evyn Underwood drew the Blue Devils into a short-lived 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth.
Colton Vivrette pitched six innings for the win, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out 10. Anthony Dunlay recorded the final two outs in the seventh after Lebanon got three runs off Ty Fleenor.
Case Collins pitched 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. He allowed seven runs (just one earned thanks to five errors) on seven hits and a walk while striking out six. Cade Thorne was tagged for the final two runs on two hits before he got the final out.
Lebanon had 10 hits to Central’s nine. Underwood and Scout Loftis each drove in two runs as they, Thorne and McPeak each picked up a pair of hits for the Blue Devils.
Adelsberger doubled twice and singled for Central. Tinnell and Reid Spencer each drove in two runs. Reid Spencer and Caden Webber had two hits apiece.
Purple Tigers edge Smith County for series sweep
CARTHAGE — Watertown scored twice in the top of the sixth inning Wednesday to take the lead and pitchers Noah Murphy and Avery Davis kept host Smith County at bay the rest of the way in a 3-2 Purple Tiger triumph, sweeping the District 5-2A series.
Bo Price drove in two of the Purple Tigers’ runs. Watertown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Smith County went in front 2-1 in the second.
Each team finished with five hits.
Murphy was the winning pitcher with both runs allowed on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Davis gave up a hit in the seventh while punching out a batter for the save.
Mt. Juliet swept by Hendersonville
HENDERSONVILLE — Hendersonville completed a District 12-4A series sweep of Mt. Juliet with a 3-1 win Wednesday.
The Commandos prevailed at Mt. Juliet 12-3 on Tuesday.
Hendersonville built a 3-0 lead Wednesday against Carter Lewis, who scattered three runs (one earned due to four errors) on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
Baylor Osborne’s home run in the sixth inning was the Golden Bears’ only run.
Mt. Juliet took a 3-0 lead the night before with three runs in the third. Kolton Tench had the Golden Bears’ only RBI.
The Commandos took control with nine runs in the fourth, six coming off starter Matthew Dickey. He and two relievers allowed eight hits. Hendersonville tacked on three scores in the seventh.
Mt. Juliet finished with three singles.
Hawks’ Serbin shuts out Gallatin 3-0
GALLATIN — Braden Serbin pitched a three-hit shutout Wednesday to lead Green Hill to a 3-0 win over Gallatin.
A junior right-hander, Serbin walked none while hitting one and striking out seven.
Green Hill scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings, finishing with nine hits.
Xander Jackson drove in two of Green Hill’s runs and Logan Barney, whose double was the Hawks’ only extra-base hit, the other as each finished with three hits. Nick Owens Jr. notched two singles.
Davis drives in Watertown walk-off as Major deals two-hitter
WATERTOWN — Avery Davis’ grounder up the middle for a fielder’s choice drove in Camden Johnson with the walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday for a 2-1 Watertown win over Smith County.
The District 5-2A series was backed up a day to Tuesday at Watertown and Wednesday at Smith County.
The Owls led 1-0 off a fourth-inning run as Ethan Montgomery drove in Bennett Gammon as they had the only hits off left-hander Zeb Major.
That was enough for Gammon, who scattered five hits while striking out 11, for 6 1/3 innings before the Purple Tigers scored their runs in the seventh. Chase Young, who doubled twice, drove in Noah Murphy with the tying run. As the catcher, Young was lifted for courtesy-runner Johnson.
Major walked two and struck out eight in the complete-game seven innings.
Green Hill run rules Green Wave
MT. JULIET — Green Hill had no trouble with visiting Gallatin on Tuesday night as the Hawks handled the visiting Green Wave 10-0 in a District 12-4A series opener.
The Hawks jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Gallatin held them there until a four-run fifth and three-run sixth to end the contest.
Corbin Craver pitched a six-inning four-hit shutout with a walk and 14 strikeouts.
Green Hill made the most with seven hits while Gallatin committed four errors. Xander Jackson had three singles as he and Nick Owens Jr. drove in three runs each. Joey Greenstreet and Grayson Beasley doubled.
