Eric (Phoenix, AZ): What are the odds that Marcus Banks gets traded and are their any PGs out there that the Suns could bring in to back-up Nash?

SportsNation Chad Ford: (12:26 PM ET ) They are trying to move Banks who's been a MAJOR bust in Phoenix (don't get me started on this ... I'm still stunned they passed on Rajon Rondo to get this guy ... that's almost worse than the contract). I think they are less worried about point guard at this point than the front court. They've been showing a lot of interest in Drew Gooden lately and the Cavs might be willing to do a deal for Banks, Kurt Thomas and a couple of first round picks (Phoenix has three this year, including the Cavs pick). Not sure if Gooden is a great fit in Phoenix ... but they seem to like him.

That explains the four team deal with the draft pick.

we'd certainly drop a bunch of payroll, and drew i think would be a great fit in our system, but he doesn't bring the defense, which i'm pretty sure is our only chance against the spurs. drew isn't guarding timmy d, unfortunately that's the difference...

against dallas, i'd guess KT wouldn't play a big part anyways, but SA/Utah is a different story. while drew gets boards, he's not fundamentally sound, that would bite us

I been talking about a Gooden for Thomas trade since the offseason. (Wouldnt do it now though)

I think Gooden would look like a whole new player in this system, but thats just me.

Diaw, Banks, Ju.Jones and PHX 1st for Gooden and Da.Jones

We become a better rebounding team, and depending on the matchup Gooden or Thomas could start at center while the other comes off the bench.

I checked that on the trade checker and the Cavs would have to give up more than that. I'm thinking maybe KT, Banks and Cavs pick for Gooden, Damon Jones and Pavlovic

I agree, I don't really want to let KT go now, but?

Again, that is way too much for Drew Gooden.

How? Getting rid of Diaw's contract alone would be a plus. Now getting rid of him for a athletic bigman that rebounds and has a decent 15-18 foot jumper is just gravy.

The reason i threw in the Suns first rounder which will be 2nd to last anyway, is because of the long-term salary the Cavs would be recieving.

Gooden is a player who can play more minutes than Thomas, plus he's more atheletic and can rebound pretty well. I'm assuming that's the thining anyway. Also, Gooden would be really useful against Dallas, whereas Kurt wouldn't. Maybe the Suns think they don't need Thomas to beat San Antonio, but could need Gooden to beat Dallas.

Because I do not see Diaw's contract as big of a problem as you do.

I don't want to get rid of Kurt Thomas. The only reason the Suns might even consider getting rid of Kurt is because he has said that his elbow won't be fully healed until he can give it a summer of rest. I don't think it'll affect his defense, but it's probably going to hurt his shooting.

If the point of Gooden is to shore up the frontcourt, moving Thomas makes no sense. It also means a much larger deal, for salary reasons. I agree with cepstrum that the combination of Banks and James Jones makes more sense.

I like Gooden and his contract is reasonable: $6.6 million this year and $13.5 over the next two, expiring in 2009. It would be worth giving up a pick to bring him to the team. The only question is then who the fourth guard would be; the Suns would have to have a plan in place to bring someone else in to fill Banks's spot.

By the way, Diaw's contract looks like a mistake right now, but the Suns can't afford to trade him at a huge loss. They have to hope he gets his act together and starts playing like someone worth at least the MLE.

Boris has more obvious upside than Banks, but I suspect there is real fear by other GM's that his effectiveness is too much a function of playing with the Suns.

If the rumor is true - trading KT would be a huge mistake. I am convinced his absence is almost as much a reason for struggle and losing as is Nash's absence. Obviously not as much... but he means much more than Diaw - MUCH MORE.

Thats funny.

That GM must be really getting on the coach's nerves by now.

Why would anybody trade an expiring contract and two 1st round picks in arguably the deepest (most hyped) draft in the past 15 years or so?

For an undersized guy to play on an undersized team? While not addressing the issue of a backup big and guard?

Diaw's talent isnt in question, its his soft mentality and until he grows a pair he'll never live up to his contract.

Maybe hes like another Joe Johnson and develops that kill instinct down the road, but who knows... i mean he is French so i doubt it. ;)

I'd take Gooden over Diaw if it means we get to keep Kurt Thomas.

I agree. Diaw's nice, but he's definitely expendable.

If Diaw can get back to the player he was at the end of last year and in the playoffs then he's worth his contract. He has less of a role with the team now with Amare & KT back so his numbers are down and he's being less aggressive. They should be showing Diaw hours of his game film against Dallas in the playoffs last year so he can see the type of player they need him to become again.

Really I don't think the problem is with Diaw so much. I've said it before. IMO, Diaw and Stoudemire are starting centers. Obviously Stoudemire wins this battle so this makes Diaw less useful and effective.

Diaw is anything but expendable. Down the stretch of games that actually count, the ball will be running through Diaw most of the time, because he's the only player besides Nash who can create good shots with any consistency against a determined defense that knows exactly what's coming.

That said, it amuses me that the Suns gave Boris $50m right after they told the press they weren't willing to give Tim Thomas $22m because of his up-and-down nature. Boris seems to play as hard as he thinks he has to.
