Eastwood Directing Jolie in The Changeling
Source: Variety
March 9, 2007

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are fast-tracking The Changeling, with Clint Eastwood looking to direct and Angelina Jolie in talks to star, reports Variety.

Written by J. Michael Straczynski, the film will become a co-production of Imagine and Eastwood's Malpaso. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard will produce with Malpaso's Rob Lorenz.

Jolie would play a woman whose son is abducted but retrieved; she suspects, however, that the returned child is not her kid. The woman must then confront corruption in the LAPD. The story is based on true events in 1920s Los Angeles.

The plan is to start production later this year.

Is this a remake of George C Scotts 1980 film of the same name? (which I liked, btw)?

It doesn't sound like it is. Which is a good thing if you ask me. The Changeling is one of my all time favorite scary movies.

Release Date: October 24, 2008 (limited; wide: Oct. 31)
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Clint Eastwood
Screenwriter: J. Michael Straczynski
Genre: Thriller
MPAA Rating: R (for some violent and disturbing content, and language)

Starring: Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Colm Feore, Amy Ryan, Michael Kelly

Plot Summary: Clint Eastwood directs Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich in a provocative thriller based on actual events: "Changeling." In the film, Christine Collins' (Jolie) prayers are met when her kidnapped son is returned. But amidst the frenzy of the photo-op reunion, she realizes this child is not hers. Facing corrupt police and a skeptical public, she desperately hunts for answers, only to be confronted by a truth that will change her forever.

Los Angeles, 1928: On a Saturday morning in a working-class suburb, Christine said goodbye to her son, Walter, and left for work. When she came home, she discovered he had vanished. A fruitless search ensues, and months later, a boy claiming to be the nine-year-old is returned. Dazed by the swirl of cops, reporters and her conflicted emotions, Christine allows him to stay overnight. But in her heart, she knows he is not Walter.

As she pushes authorities to keep looking, she learns that in Prohibition-era L.A., women don't challenge the system and live to tell their story. Slandered as delusional and unfit, Christine finds an ally in activist Reverend Briegleb (Malkovich), who helps her fight the city to look for her missing boy. Based on the actual incident that rocked California's legal system, "Changeling" tells the shocking tale of a mother's quest to find her son, and those who won't stop until they silence her.

this movie was so awful that I had to walk out after 40 minutes. I just couldn't take another second of Angelina screaming for an Oscar as she repeatedly yelled "That's not my son!". This whole movie wreaked of please give me an Oscar.

I got $1000 ASFN bucks that says she gets the Oscar.

BTW, the bride and I thought the movie was quite good, and I usually don't go for this kind of movie.

Just watched this movie. Excellent! Disparage all you want, but Jolie is a damned good actor and Eastwood is clearly a master of his craft. I don't particularly like Jolie in her typical roles (ie, Tomb Raider, Wanted, Mr & Mrs Smith, etc....), but she threw it down in this flick.

What's so amazing is that this was a true story. The boy really did try to con everyone into believing he was Walter Collins.

After reviewing the Wikipedia page on the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders, I see that some aspects were left off altogether. Northcutt's mother was involved, there was molestation and sexual assaults committed on the kidnapped boys and the timeline of the impostor child's confession was off. I think those elements should have been left in place in the movie. It would have made it truer and rawer (is that even a word? :D).

Other than those elemental discrepancies, the realism and the trueness of the film to the period was on target. I would highly recommend this flick to everyone. This is a TRUE FRIGGIN STORY....

This movie sat on my kitchen counter for a week until Blockbuster called and charged my credit card $24.00 and I returned it. Guess I'll have to rent it again and watch it this time.

I agree that Jolie was excellent. I too thought the movie was very good but a little too long.
