Charlie Ward’s contract approval to become the new Florida A&M head men’s basketball coach will have to wait.
Initially scheduled for April 16 at 3 p.m., the FAMU Board of Trustees meeting was postponed after a Zoom outage that impacted thousands nationwide.
The meeting also included updates on FAMU’s presidential search. University officials haven’t yet announced a new date or timetable for the FAMU Board of Trustees meeting.
Under Florida’s public meeting laws, FAMU Board of Trustees meetings require a week’s notice to ensure public access. For example, if FAMU were to announce a new Board of Trustees meeting date on Thursday, April 17, the earliest date for Ward’s five-year, $975,000 contract approval would be Thursday, April 24.
However, exceptions can be made for emergency and special meetings.
FAMU hired Ward away from Tallahassee’s Florida High School, where he’s coached the boys’ basketball team since 2018 and won the 2022 state championship in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s 3A classification. The 54-year-old from Thomasville, Georgia, will replace former FAMU basketball coach Patrick Crarey II, who left for Grambling State on April 11.
Ward is a household name in sports, winning the Heisman Trophy while quarterbacking the Florida State Seminoles football team to a 1993 national championship win. Ward, who also played basketball at FSU, was selected with the 26th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks and had a 12-year professional career.
He’s the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA.
Ward will be FAMU’s 16th head men’s basketball coach.
