I don't know. I think cheesebeef would just soon forget about this season. I do not think he sent gifts.

Packers Poll
Following the bizarre occurrences of last week that enabled the Packers to win the NFC North, many Packers players spoke of being a team of destiny, with angels watching over them, etc. Just how far will the Packers fly in the postseason? Will they:

Beat Seattle in the first round game at home, but lose to either St. Louis or Philadelphia.
Beat Seattle in the first round, beat either St. Louis or Philadelphia, but fall in the NFC Championship Game.
Win the NFC Championship Game, but lose in the Super Bowl.
Win the Super Bowl title with Brett Favre being recognized much like John Elway was when the Broncos beat the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.

Cardinals receiver accepts mayor’s invite to watch game at Lambeau

Nathan Poole may be voted Green Bay’s man of the year, or at least man of the moment.

The Arizona Cardinals wide receiver on Sunday caught the game-winning touchdown pass Sunday to defeat the Minnesota Vikings, 18-17, and grant the Green Bay Packers a playoff game — at home. In the process, Poole won the heart of many a Packers fan, including Mayor Jim Schmitt.

“Of course, he’s my favorite non-Packers player,” Schmitt said of Poole. “The Packers deserve to be in the playoffs, and the way the system works they wouldn’t have been allowed in without a victory over the Vikings, and Nathan played a big part of that.”

At Schmitt’s invitation, Poole and his wife will travel to Green Bay this weekend to accompany the mayor to see the Packers take on the Seattle Seahawks.

The attention has taken Poole by surprise.

“I heard that the fans in Green Bay were quite some fans, but I didn’t expect this,” he said in a phone interview Monday.

The Arizona Cardinals organization has received e-mail thanking Poole for his catch. There was also the invitation from Schmitt, and the mayor also plans to give Poole a key to the city.

“Anyone who assists in getting us in the playoffs like Nathan did is a friend of the city,” Schmitt said. He noted that no taxpayer dollars will be used to bring Poole to Green Bay for the game or to pay for his ticket to the game.

There’s more thanks to come.

WXWX-FM, Sports Radio 107.5 The Fan, is asking fans to help the station put together a thank-you card and gift basket today for Poole. T.C. Martin, who will be at Stadium View Sports Bar & Grill, 1963 Holmgren Way, from 4 to 7 p.m. today, said the bar plans to present the gift and card to Poole this weekend.

Packers President Bob Harlan said the team doesn’t plan to recognize Poole at Sunday’s game.

Poole said he wasn’t thinking of playoff implications when he made his catch in the final seconds of the game.

“I was just trying to get a victory for the team, because we’ve been down,” Poole said. “Just trying to get this victory so we could lift our spirits going into the off-season.”

Schmitt was interviewed Monday on ESPNRadio’s “The Dan Patrick Show” and also called to thank the mayor of Phoenix for the Cardinals’ victory and made a wager with Seattle’s mayor.

Schmitt will ship a pound of cheese for every point between the Packers’ final score and the Seahawks’ final score if the Seahawks win. In return, Schmitt recommended Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels provide a pound of seafood, preferably salmon, for every point the Packers have over the Seahawks in a Packers victory.

“We will accept the challenge, but we’re a little bit concerned that you guys will run out of cheese,” said Marianne Bichsel, a spokeswoman for Nickels’ office.

The losing mayor also is expected to include a city shirt.

“The Green Bay Packers are going to continue their dominating winning streak and beat Mike Holmgren and the Seattle Seahawks,” Schmitt said in news release Monday.
