The Kansas City Chiefs recently re-signed Charles Omenihu to a one-year deal to solidify their depth at defensive end. General manager Brett Veach still needs to pursue young, cheap options at edge rusher, especially as George Karlaftis enters the fourth year of his rookie contract. The 2025 NFL draft offers the Chiefs several chances to land long-term answers.
Penn State Nittany Lions defensive end Amin Vanover is a long-limbed edge rusher unofficially listed at 6'4", 262 lbs. He explodes off the line with an impressive first step before engaging the offensive tackle with his powerful upper body. Vanover fires his hands into the lineman’s frame and extends his arms to lock out and displace his opponent.
Vanover’s pass rush plan includes long-arm moves, rips, spins, swims and two-handed swipes. He counters with a rip or swim when his bull rush slows down. Vanover converts speed to power, maximizing his long arms and explosive strides. He attacks the B-gap with a speed rush or pries it open with his power.
Vanover possesses an intriguing frame but lacks elite athleticism. His pad level rises quickly after the snap, and his stiff hips prevent him from bending under and around offensive linemen. He struggles to halt his momentum and redirect in a timely manner. Vanover needs to develop and diversify his pass rush plan to rely less on his length and power.
Vanover never truly received the opportunity to shine as a full-time starter at Penn State. Several years removed from his injury-riddled 2023 season and coming off his most productive campaign, Vanover could be a nice developmental option to stash on the practice squad or back end of the roster.
Vanover applied for a medical waiver to return to Penn State in 2025, but the NCAA denied his request. All signs point toward him being a late round selection or a priority undrafted free agent.
