Didn't Los sunS call him the "associate head coach" from 2008-2013? They must have thought something of him during that time.

Anyway, why would he or Wright accept a job at the perennially tanking sunS when they are the monarchs of their respective schools. Majerle's made his cashish, he doesn't need a payday.

ego for Majerle. You really think a guy who played at the level in the NBA... hell, and the Dream Team 2, wants to be relegated to Flagstaff his entire career?

As for Wright... maybe he has an aneurysm and starts making insane decisions.

Flagstaff? Heh. You don't know where GCU is located, do you? Either that or you think he's at my alma mater NAU.

Agree with both Phrazbit and cheesebeef. No way would Majerle turn the job down.

He'd be a lousy choice, but he's there if they want him.

Funny. I wonder how many other people think this because of the name of the school.

Maybe a phone inquiry to his agent but it's such a long shot that I wouldn't put much effort into it.
I go all out. Offer big bucks, offer a guaranteed long term contract. Offer a say in personnel decisions. If he says not, fine.

There is a big difference between a serviceable backup to the Head Coach and being the guy in the limelight. With the Front Office, with the players and with the Press.

Of course they thought something of him, but Majerle has learned, and matured, as Head Coach of young players. First hand experience he did not have in 2013.

Whomever the Suns select as their next (hopefully long-term) Head Coach, I hope they hire one with leadership experience.

Please cite examples of when and where this happened. Otherwise, this is just conjecture (and poor conjecture) on your part.

I'm surprised at the 4 votes for Jason Kidd.

What has he done that gives the impression of competence? The only thing, to me, that stands out in his 2 stops as a head coach, is that he has been a bit of a cancer... which... is about the last thing you want in a leadership role.

Realistically... I think there are really good odds it comes down to Fizdale or Luke Walton (who isn't listed in the poll), and I'd be okay with either... I'd probably prefer Walton.

I think Kidd got votes by people who don't follow the NBA closely. They've just heard that Kidd has been a head coach for the Nets and Bucks and has interest in the Suns job. He hasn't been a good coach and if he plans on continuing his career as a coach he'd be best served being an assistant to someone for a couple of seasons. I'm not sure who would want him on their staff, maybe Rick Carlisle, he did play a couple years under him in Dallas.

I'm most surprised that Triano has received a vote. I thought everyone was done with him and done with the idea of promoting the interim coach for no reason other than there is a familiarity there with the players already. Maybe if he didn't get blown out like Watson did, which ended up costing him his job, or if he'd gotten one of the young players to develop a good amount under his guidance but he hasn't done anything to warrant being retained as head coach. Jackson's progression is not because of Triano, Jackson was playing hard from day 1 and it just took him some time to get accustomed to the speed of things in the NBA. Once he did that, he's been very productive on his own. Triano hasn't made him a starter or anything, he was named a starter because of Warren and Booker's injuries. Those injuries have to fall on Triano's shoulders a bit because they shouldn't be playing 40 minutes a night this late in a lost season.

This poll is pretty bad. All the options are pretty poor.

Guys like Kokosov, Nurse, Tibbetts, Wright, Bennett etc should be on it.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Jeff Hornacek was a perfect example of an Assistant Coach learning to be a Head Coach on the job (and not having the fortitude to oversee NBA millionaires). For GM and Head Coach, the Suns have example after example of not springing for those who have actually experienced the job.

Kidd may have his flaws but at least he has build a teamplay around Giannis.

After his departure the Bucks became less effective and organized.

How so? Their record is certainly better since they canned him. He consistently complained about his own players to the press, he made power plays against his own front offices... the dude is a cancer. I wouldn't want him with the franchise in any capacity.

I'm intrigued by Igor Kokoskov as a possible head coach for the Suns. He has a a lot of experience as an assistant head coach and he is currently an assistant with the Jazz. He also coached for the Suns as an assistant coach. I hear he is very familiar with Doncic. I'd like for the Suns to at least give him a look.

Three assistant coach references do not equal one head coach need. :shades:

Enough of LOTJ -- learn on the job. As much as experience, we need a Head Coach with the credentials -- proven credentials -- and courage to stand up to Sarver's interference.

One who will say to Sarver at the interview, "You count the money." And to McDonough, "You provide a balanced roster." And to both of them. "I'll do the coaching."

BC. I disagree with your basic premise that being an assistant is not requisite experience. Bruce Arians is an example in football, and there are plenty of NBA assistants who became excellent head coaches. Now, I do agree that just because a guy has assistant coaching experience does not mean he has the leadership and managerial skills to be a head coach. That's what the evaluation and interview process is for.

Still hoping against hope for Wright.

Who do you have in mind as the Suns new head coach?
