Despite knowing it is very early, and everything will change, I like doing these. This is viewing our roster as it is, but also understanding some needs will get addressed in free agency.

1-Eric Kendricks-ILB-UCLA (6.00, 230)
*Instinctual and athletic, Kendricks would give the Cardinals a legit option at ILB regardless of how Daryl Washington's situation plays out. He is a bit small, but he reads plays well enough that it doesn't matter, and he plays all three downs.

2-Eli Harold-OLB/DE-Virginia (6.04, 235)
*This is a bit of a projection, but Harold is young and has the frame to put on weight. Also, he is being drafted as a sub edge rush player, and won't have to play OLB is base packages. Immediately becomes our most explosive edge player, and comes in with a roel to excell at.

3-Ali Marpet-OG-Hobart (6.03, 307)
*I watched the Senior Bowl and have bought into the hype on this kid. He is so much different than the OGs I have liked in the past, but I have been proven wrong about many of those. Marpet isn't athletic, and he isn't huge. What he is though, is an agressive technician who brings toughness and physicality inside. He is a similar prospect to Richie Incognito which I believe this defense could use as it has some lacksidascal personalities on which need a kick.

4-Ty Montgomery-WR/KR/PR-Stanford (5.11, 216)
*Montgomery couldn't catch a cold at the Senior Bowl, but that is fine, because he is more of a returner than anything. Cardinals need to upgrade the return game, and Montgomery is a the type of guy who will stick in that role.

5-Nick Marshall-CB-Auburn (6.02, 205)
*Lots of ways to improve special teams and the secondary. Marshall was a QB in college, and played CB at the senior bowl. Round 5 is probably way too early, but this isn't a great draft, he is a great athlete, and it is better to add special teams players with upside rather than guys who don't.

6-Shaquille Riddick-DE/OLB-West Virginia (6.05, 242)
*A long, lean under achiever in college, Riddick has his best year this year. I don't expect him to do great things in the NFL, but he is athletic, can be another edge rusher, and can play special teams. I think he can develop into what Schofield has developed into for the Seahawks.

7-Chris Harper-WR-California (5.11, 176)
*Small and quick player who I believe was held down a bit by poor QB play at Cal. A true Jr., he has talent, and is still young. He runs solid routes, and can be a contributing player. A buy low 7th rounder.

***

Free agency is going to change all of this, but I like this mix. There are many players I really like, and it is tough to make some of these calls. The tough part is that we have to start considering who will make the roster when it comes down to later picks. It is why I went CB, WR, LB late, as I think those are spots low picks can come in and earn a spot.

Good mock...I've been piecing together scouting notes and I'll be posting my thoughts on several (mostly defensive) players soon, but I wanted to point a couple things out about Eli.

1. He played 2014 at around 250lbs...and said he is expecting to check in at the combine between 250-255. He's been focusing on adding functional muscle without harming his agility.

2. Playing with his newfound bulk...he started working this past year on developing his bullrush. He is still very raw at it but it progressed nicely throughout the season.

3. Former track star whose speed translates well to the football field.

4. Film room champion.

5. Has experience playing from a 4 point stance and standing up.

6. Diagnoses plays very well. Good situational awareness.

7. Was asked to drop into coverage on occasion.

8. Has very long arms.

9. Does have a tendency to over pursue at times but is disciplined when asked to maintain backside contain

10. Needs to improve tackling consistency. Tends to tackle high and doesn't always wrap up, rather he tries to drag down.

11. Highly explosive off the snap from 4 point stance and standing up.

12. Grew up without a father and his mother died in 2011 of pancreatic cancer. Lost a nephew in 2010 from a heart condition while playing basketball.

13. Inspired to participate in community events (Charity, Counseling youth)

As far as prospects that will be available when the Cardinals pick, Eli is definitely high on my list. I am 99% certain that if we want him, we'd have to pick him at 24 though or move up in the 2nd round. I fully expect him to have a solid combine. Has been on the Steelers and Ravens radar according to their local media and heard the Colts and Bears have been warming up on the prospect of this kid.

NaVarro Bowman is listed at 6'0.

Patrick Willis at 6'1.

Bobby Wagner listed at 6'0.

Sean Lee is 6'2.

Thomas Davis is 6'1.

James Lauranitis is 6'2.

Luke Kuechley is the prototype at 6'3.

So, while I get what you are saying, it isn't the stretch you are making it out to be.

Harold is on my list of guys I would love, but I'm not sure they will be around for round 2.

Eli Harold
Owa Odighizuwa
Zach Hodges
Danielle Hunter

four players who would be great in round 2, but probably won't make it. Hodges might be the most likely, but I'm not sure how he would fit at ILB which is where I think he would make the most impact with the Cardinals.

Really nice job Chopper. Starting with Kendricks from UCLA is what I would have done if I hadn't already covered that slot by taking Justin Durant in my free agency mock up. Following him up with Eli Harold is brilliant, as pointed out by the support that Hypo. added in his post confirming your #2 selection.

I find your pick of Ali Marpet most intriguing. I believe that you are on to something there, as we have not had a beast in the middle since Denny Green drafted the Samoan kid from Mesa High to block for Leinart. If I recall, I believe his name was Lutui. In thinking about this, I really liked how he could light up the rest of the O-line and bring some passion to the run game when he got involved. To me that would be such a welcome change to our O-line.

Love Kendricks as a Cardinal! I think Perryman was just as good at the college level but he's only 5'10". I would like Paul Dawson in the 2nd if they don't go inside LB in the 1st.

As most on this board know, I am a big fan of consistently adding talent to the offensive line. Also, I have been poor at projecting some of these guys from college to the pros. What I like most about Marpet is that he brings physicality and toughness to our line, along with strong technique. Now, I havent' watched any tape of Hobart. What I liked was a small school guy coming to the Senior Bowl, showing awesome technique and competing against big college program players. To me, that says a ton about his preperation, and understanding of what it will take to stay in the NFL. I think our line needs more of this. He is a prototype RG, he causes more competition inside with Watford, Cooper, Larsen, and Sendlein. All good things.

Full disclosure, I may be over my skis on this one, and I'm sure K9 will make fun of me about it sometime in the near future. That being said, strength, technique, and competitiveness are things that seem to translate to the NFL in offensive linemen.

Chopper, I wouldn't lose any sleep over K-9 making fun of you on the board. I have noted his posts very carefully and guess what-----he is quick to find fault with nearly everyone not named K-9, but he very seldom has a solution to the problem that the discussion is about. It would seem that he is more interested in finding fault than he is with genuinely fixing problems for the most part. Your work stands on its own merits and you should keep it up without concern from anyone who is not willing to provide an alternate solution to the problem.

Though I appreciate the backing, that is just a quasi-inside joke between me and K9. No worries on my end. There is a reason I don't get paid for my scouting reports.

It is why I went CB, WR, LB late, as I think those are spots low picks can come in and earn a spot.

I always look forward to your mocks. You've got a very good eye for talent. Here are my thoughts:

1. Harold is a better prospect that Hendricks and should go higher in the draft---would be very surprised to see Hendricks go in Round 1 as he is on the small side and scouts are wondering if he will be able to hold up physically in the middle.

Harold has a good chance to go in the top 35. You described him very well. he has proto-typical 34 OLB qualities.

2. I applaud your conviction on Ali Marpet and I too was impressed with him at the Senior Bowl, especially seeing as he played tackle at Hobart. I can see what you are hoping for here---a poor man's Zach Martin who kicked inside to guard at the Senior Bowl and wound up rejuvenating the Cowboys' running game.

3. I spent a couple of hours the other day watching slot WRs who are good return men. Montgomery did not stand out to me as much as Lockett, Crowder, Dorsett and Christion Jones. And what really stood out to me was how physical Lockett, Crowder and Jones are on offense and on STs---these guys can block and tackle with a punch! So---I agree with you in wanting to take a WR here, and while I am intrigued with Montgomery, especially with the production he put up as a junior, I am just wondering if he's a superior talent to the others. BTW---spent ten minutes or so watching Chris Harper---man, one of the best RAC WRs I've watched this year. Very good return man too. I'd be more excited about him in the 4th---and I think he will go in the 4th round.

4. I really like your pick of Nick Marshall in the 5th round. Have been touting him on other threads. I wonder too if he would be even better suited to play safety. Either way, his physical talents and competitiveness are impressive.

5. Riddick is a very intriguing prospect---had 3 sacks versus Baylor in WV's upset. Because he was a grad transfer he hasn't been able to generate a great deal of previous attention. But he could turn some heads at the combine, if he is invited. He's be a value in the 6th round on potential alone.

The combine is going to change some things, and you are correct that Harold could end up being a top 45 pick. Where I feel he could drop is that the draft is loaded with edge hybrid players. If Harold blows up the combine, he could be the 3rd or 4th OLB/DE drafted. That can totally happen. It is tough because you have to consider where Gregory, Ray, Fowler, Orchard, Dupree, Hunter, Golden, and Maudlin rank compared to Harold as well.

I get where you are coming from regarding Eric Kendricks as I am higher on him than most. His combine weigh in will matter, but I see him as a similar prospect to NaVarro Bowman whn ehe came out. Same height, and same knocks. Bowman was considered a technically good ILB, but lacking great measureables, and came across as solid not sexy. Now he is one of the better LBs in the league. Instincts matter in terms of ILBs, and make up for a ton. Chris Borland has no business being as good as he was this year, but his instincts make him a starting caliber player. I see that and more in Kendricks.

I like Lockett better than Montgomery, but I think Montgomery is still around in the 4th, while I'm not sure about the rest. Lockett is more likely to go in the top 64 than he is being available at #120.

It will be interesting to see where Harper goes. He doesn't have much of a resume, nor does he show great size. I think he drops because there are so many WRs available, and Harper has more questions than answers at this point. That being said, somewhere between the 5th and 7th round is more about preference than anything else.

Some random draft thoughts...

Someone is going to get a steal in Josh Shaw out of USC. This is an example of a kid getting a wake up call after making a poor decision.

I would draft Todd Gurley over Melvin Gordon. Probably David Cobb-Minnesota as well. Melvin Gordon looks like he will have Chris Wells disease.

WR class isn't as good on the top end as last year, but is still deep.

Brandon Sherff OT Iowa is going to be interesting. No buzz at all, but I'm curious to see where he goes.

There is a ton of 3-4 DE talent in this draft, and we have pretty good players already. I won't blame them if the Cardinals take one.

I think Owa Odighizwa would be a perfect fit for our defense.

There will be some good CBs available in rounds 2 and 3.

I like Gerold Holliman - Louisville as a deep FS...doubt we are drafting a S in the first 3 rounds.

I'm not sold on Gordon either and think Gurley and Coleman are better, easily. I can't get a grip on Cobb. He's very productive but I don't know about him in the NFL. He kind of reminds me of the kid from BC last year that the Giants drafted, who showed flashes but may be limited as a NFL back.

Owa or Harold in round 2 would be incredible. I like Hunter in round 2 too.

I also think there's not a ton of top end CB talent but very deep talent.

Chopper, I believe that Keim is also a believer in upgrading the O-line on a very regular basis in the draft. Marpet looks to be the 'real deal' in showing what proper preparation can do for an individual. I would love to see him come to the Cards about round 3. I believe in an O-lineman who infuses life and fire into his play, as it often inspires his team mates to work with more passion as well.

So far as WR/KR/PR is concerned, I feel the most important thing is that Ted Ginn be replaced on our roster. There are several who could fill this slot, as shown by both you and Mitch. I can see some availability there in the draft, all the way from round 2 through round 5 or maybe even 6, so it would be a great position to take BPA (at our pick for what ever round fits). I believe that doing so would also allow for us to take a decent CB at some point, (using the return specialist slot so as to be flexible enough to allow for another need to be filled).

I know that a lot of people are 'very interested' in the upcoming draft, however I am more inclined to see just how Keim will use free agency this year to set up our draft. He has been very effective, (and efficient), doing this so far, and he has indicated that he is looking to get involved in free agency by pursuing one or two higher cost free agents this year. I would really be stoked if he were to go after someone like Wiznieuski or Durant, or Gore.

Thoughts on Thursday...

Tevin Coleman is a nice runner. I think CBUS had posted some comments about his intelligence. I'm not sure how that translates at the RB position. Probably a 2nd rounder, and I'm not sure we will be looking to draft one that high.

I still like Jeremy Langford RB Michigan St. in terms of skills and cost. 3rd or 4th round guy who does a lot well.

I would rather upgrade OL at the top of the draft vs RB.

I looked again, there isn't one QB who is not going in the top 10 that I can justify drafting. None have the physical tools Logan Thomas has, and they all have just as many warts if not more. Not saying Thomas is the answer, but he is better than any QB in the draft not names Winston/Mariota after being in the system for a year.

It is a nice draft for 3-4 teams. A bunch of edge guys and 5T DEs. The tough part is finding ones who can make the conversion and stick.

Just a guess, the Cardinals will be trading up from their second round spot to a higher second round spot. 35 to 40 range.

Like Kendricks. Hes my backup pick if a couple other guys get swiped. Hes an apt permanent replacement for DWash, if it comes to that. OR if Dwash does come back, then wed have the most athletic ILB DUO in the NFL. Win/Win. Also not worried about his size. As pointed out Bowman and Willis themselves are not huge guys. Athleticism is the major issue, and hes got buckets of it.

Harold will not be there in the 2nd. I think if you want a pass rusher, Owa will be the guy still available. Raw but lots of upside.

On round 5 you say "This isnt a great draft, which is why youre taking Marshall early". Could not disagree more. This is a fantastically deep draft at several positions.

Do not like Nick Marshall as a CB, and heres why. This is the NFL. Each guy at each position is the best in the world at his position. If I want a CB, draft a CB. If I want a RB, draft a RB. etc. I don't understand the logic in saying, I need a CB, draft an athletic QB. If Nick were any good as a CB, hed never have converted to QB, and vice versa. There are plenty of CBs at every level of this draft who are better CBs than QB/CB Nick Marshall. All he has his athleticism, but everyone in the NFL has athleticism.

Ty Montgomery cant catch, lets use him as a kick returner. What? Don't burn a pick on a pure special teamer this high. If all you want is a returner then wait till the 7th round, take the fastest guy remaining who can catch, but is an awful WR. Hes your kick return specialist.

Beasley is only undersized for a DE. As an OLB, hes a little bit light. Most are in the 240s and hes a lean 235. But he can put on the weight.

And the difference in size between an OLB and ILB is because the power running game goes at the OLBs, not the middle. The ILBs have the benefit of having a big NT like Dan Williams to help them out. They usually only deal with a G or FB. Whereas OLBs have to deal with pulling guards or Ts coming at them, in addition to having to stop the RB. That's what 'setting the edge' is when they talk about DEs.

Kendricks size would only be an issue if he got manhandled, and hes proven at UCLA, that he can take on anybody of any size.

Height is not an issue. With guys like Minter and Buster, they are sub-athletic. That's why I said athleticism is the major issue. Don't worry how tall a guy is. Worry whether hes got speed, football IQ, and tackling ability

Worry whether hes got speed, football IQ, and tackling ability

right but i m talking about beasley playing at OLB in 3-4 defense weak side

I don't believe he projects as an OLB in a 3-4. ILB for a 3-4 or WLB for a 4-3. Similar to how Vin MIller projected.

Because not every fast guy is a good returner. It takes a certain mindset and skillset to be a good return guy. Montgomery did a really good job as a returner in college, and I believe that is where he projects best as a pro. He can be a 3rd or 4th WR, KR, and PR which completely warrants a 4th round pick. We just spent 3 mil on Ted Ginn to fill that very role. Why not fill it with a better returner for a fraction of the cost?
