Chris Drury's Eyes Are ‘Wide Open’ As He's Willing To Hire A First-Time NHL Coach

With the New York Rangers officially firing Peter Laviolette on Saturday, their search for a new head coach begins now.

This is the third time since 2021 that the Rangers are forced to look for a new boss man behind the bench.

After seeing what David Quinn, Gerard Gallant, and Laviolette had to offer, does Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury have specific criteria he is looking for in a coach?

After the disastrous season the Rangers just had, Drury is open to looking outside the box when it comes to a new coach, which includes potentially hiring someone with no prior NHL head coaching experience.

“My eyes are wide open,” Drury said. “I am not going at this with any preset dispositions. If it is a first-time coach and it's the best fit, great. As far as what the team needs, again, we're just trying to find the best fit we can to do what we need to do. And obviously, our goal is to try and be back in the playoffs next year, so we're looking at a lot of different scenarios and a lot of different candidates.”

According to Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today, eight candidates to keep an eye on are David Carle, Jay Leach, Michael Peca, Joel Quenneville, Mike Sullivan, Rick Tocchet, John Tortorella, and Jay Woodcroft.

It’s unclear how long Drury’s coaching search will take and if any candidate has an upper edge at this point in time.
