Initial reports were that the mRNA vaccines were 90-95% effective at preventing infection. More recent (real world) data seem largely consistent.

Here is a summary article:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01505-x

A nationwide vaccination campaign in Israel found the Pfizer–BioNTech vaccine, co-developed by Pfizer in New York City and BioNTech in Mainz, Germany, to be 95% effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection seven days or more after the second dose3.

Data are reported here:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33964222/

I haven't kept up with the literature on this so 5-10% might not be exactly correct. But it is true that some vaccinated individuals will contract the virus. The good news has always been that this small population will experience much milder symptoms than the un-vaccinated population.

But in order to get to 5-10% positives among vaccinated, you have to assume that literally everyone either contracts or "would have" contracted the disease.

That's an understatement. It's like saying that if condoms are 90-95% effective, 5-10% of women will be pregnant at all times.

The vaccine doesnt prevent you from contracting the virus and thus testing positive.. it just helps you to elicit the right response to fight it when you do.

You're right 5-10% doesn't mean that 5-10% of the vaccinated population tested positive. It means that the infection rate in the vaccinated population is 5-10% of the infection rate in the unvaccinated population.

The important point is that the rate of infection in vaccinated people is not zero.

That immune response will keep the viral titer low enough that you are much less likely to test positive though.

Are you trying to argue that it's likely that Paul's test was a false positive because the breakthrough rate is significantly smaller than the false positive rate? I assume he would've been tested multiple times.

Well one thing is for certain.. we dont have any statics scholars in this group lol

This thread can be summed up so far to..

•Chris Paul presumably tested positive for covid (professional sports teams lie all the time about what is really wrong with a given player so for all we know his shoulder flared up or something else)
•Chris Paul presumably got vaccinated (again short of Chris Paul showing us a legit vaccine card we will prob never know.. again they lie about these things)
•Most important if Chris Paul has covid he will be fine vaccinated or not.. he is a healthy 36 year old in peak athletic condition. Certainly he is not vitamin D deficient and has a top notch medical team looking after him

My apologies for being “that guy” but I have been out of the loop today… did we actually learn anything relevant today?
