As near as I can tell from the Suns' baffling ticketing website, a lower bowl season ticket is somewhere in the $4000-5000 range. So you're talking about taking the revenue from more than 1000 season ticket purchasers and throwing it away. What kind of message does that send to the fans who forked over that hard-earned money?

I really doubt any of those fans view it in that sense, they just want to watch an entertaining product.

It would have been interesting to waive Chriss and see whether anyone snatched him up. I can see that waiving him would have looked worse for McD, a mere two years after jumping through hoops to draft him. Similar story for BK, except no one would have picked him up for sure. As SirStef said, it would have gained us two roster spots...

At only $3.2 million, it's hard to imagine 29 teams passing on him. This is a league in which the likes of Michael Beasley and Josh Smith keep finding someone willing to say, "Well maybe now he's changed."

Flip-side of my argument is... why not just waive both and create two roster spots instead of getting Melton and Anderson? THAT is the only mystery in my mind.
You still have to pay Chriss and BK plus two new players if no one picks them up. And I'm wondering if any team would have picked Chriss up. BK and Anderson just flipped teams not much cost.

The Suns could have declined Chriss' 4th year option which would have made him a small expiring contract. I would be surprised if they couldn't find a team to either take him on without sending anyone back, only giving us a 2nd round pick for him. Giving up on him is fine but we paid a premium for him 2 years ago, trading 2 later 1st round picks from that draft and the rights to Bogdan. That makes Chriss a negative overall for the Suns. That wasn't going to look better if they kept him though.

The Anderson/Knight salaries aren't pretty. I'm not entirely sure it's better to pay Anderson to go away next year to get his cap hit down to the same as it would have cost to keep Knight. We could have had him ride the bench for another year if he sucked or make him accept a buyout, which would lessen the cap hit for him even more. It's too early to tell if that was the right play or not. Knight was the best PG on our roster before the trade was made. That says something about how badly we need to add a quality PG. Getting rid of our best PG for a 2nd round pick who happens to be a PG that did well in summer league isn't that encouraging. Anderson may be a positive contributor this year also but he plays a position that we were supposed to have filled already.

A lot of people said that we need to wait to judge that trade because there was going to be another trade made. We're still waiting for that other trade and with how much time is left before training camp starts it doesn't look like we have another trade being completed.

This trade is close enough talent wise, (or lack of talent) there had to be attitude issues. Otherwise why bother.

Has it been confirmed why Chriss did not participate in summer league?

I don't think we'll get anymore confirmation than what McD said on his last radio interview about how there are things they see that fans don't and that played a role in why they decided to trade Chriss. I imagine he's been shopped since the draft and this deal was the one that McD liked the best, for whatever reason. It would be odd for him to come out now or in the future and talk more about Chriss not playing in Summer League for us. That time has past.

It was said by the Suns that Chriss was working on his conditioning in Washington during the Summer League and then he just started showing up to games. I can't imagine the front office was happy about that, whether he said he was doing that or it was a cover story for him when he showed up that made that story look a bit ridiculous. Who knows if he asked out of SL because he planned on working on his conditioning like the official story said at the time and then he just decided to show up or if that was a cover the team said because they were shopping him and didn't want to be questioned during SL about him. Either way, his showing up looked bad for everyone, not just the Suns front office but also himself. We don't know for sure who said what but I think that whole ordeal basically ensured he wasn't returning.

Chriss showing up for summer league (when he was supposed to be working out in Washington) might have sealed his fate with the Suns. Perhaps the Suns were glad to get rid of him the first chance they had if they thought his attitude was an issue.

Cmon. That’s backwards. You don’t evaluate trades by the GMs, you evaluate GMs by the trades.

Which GM traded for Harden?

Which GM is able to attract Free agents that actually fit what their team needs.?

It isn't close. That means Morey is by far the better GM. The better GM usually wins the trades he makes.

Who's roster would you prefer. Morey's or McDonough's?

Morey is a proven, quality GM, but he isn't batting 1.000 and McD isn't hitting .000.

JC is right.

I'm on the brink with McD, but this move... IMO the backlash is a product of people expecting things to suck rather than a reaction of the trade itself.

If someone had suggested right after the draft that we make this exact trade I think the reaction would have been "LOL, the Rockets are not stupid enough to take on Knight."

And again, I know I said it earlier, Morey has buttered his bread on analytics, the moves they've made this summer are moves that I doubt they'd even consider in past seasons. They got close to a title and now I think they're flailing. The Morey of a couple seasons ago wouldn't have touched players like Anthony and Knight with a 10 foot pole.

Morey and Ainge are currently considered 2 of the best GMs in the league, but Ainge had a really rough first 4 years in Boston, Morey basically treaded water for 5 years prior to the Harden trade, if OKC had not stupidly screwed up the Harden situation I'm pretty sure Morey doesn't survive another season.

I was looking for something else from Bordow about Summer League and came across this tweet where he mentions the Suns wanted Chriss to stay with his strength and conditioning workouts in Seattle rather than be a part of Summer League. I remember hearing that but the way it's worded sheds some light on things, how he said the Suns preferred he stay with the workouts he was doing. Of course he ended up just showing up for Summer League, which seemed unexpected by everyone and if they preferred he stick with that perhaps that plays into McD's comments about fans not being privvy to everything that happens behind the scenes and in this case it seems they wanted him doing one thing, that it appeared he was and then he decided to do something else which wasn't a good sign for the Suns since he had issues following directions during the season. He did get that 1 game suspension in January I believe.

It looks like the Suns were anxious to get rid of him. My guess is it could have turned into another Bledsoe type situation if the Suns kept him. No wonder Bender was the preferred player of the two.

So this whole argument about picks and how we used them to get players I kinda see where everyone is going with that. If you are going to do a true accounting, then players we got in return had picks and players used in their histories just to get to the point of being on the Suns. So say we used an extra second rounder to get a guy who we trade for a guy who had an extra first rounder from his previous team to acquire him, are we not acquiring a guy worth a higher pick history? Thus technically worth more? Essentially on paper a value pick. These analysis always only focus on your home team gave up, but not the history of what you are gaining. Credits versus debits. We are only looking at what it took to get guys, not the value intrinsically of the guys we got in return in the equation.

That's like saying we are only focusing on the money going out, but not the money coming in! Just doesn't make sense from an accounting point of view. You cannot look at just what we gave up in trades without valuing what we gained in trades.

It was reported by Gambo either the day of the trade or a day before, possibly even a day after, that he had that surgery. I can't remember and I don't care to look it up. This is the first I've heard of missing games though. Gambo said it was minor and a 3-4 week recovery, IIRC.

This was the first I heard about it. The trade looks even better now.

I remember that, which begs the question, is this ANOTHER surgery? Maybe the other knee?

I don't believe it is. I found the Gambo tweet and it seems that Sham is reporting now that Knight previously had surgery. I think it's getting mentioned now because camp is starting soon and Knight may not be ready for it but according to Gambo when he originally mentioned it, Knight should be ready for the regular season but may not be ready for the start of training camp.

Here is Gambo's tweet...

It appears it's the same thing. Both are mentioned as cleanups but it wasn't reported nationally before for some reason. It's odd that Gambo knew about it and didn't say anything despite it taking place 6 weeks before he mentioned it also. Who knows. I think missing part or all of training camp could have played a significant role in the Suns moving on from him though. That would have been big for him if he missed it with us. A new coach, new system, and supposedly a new attitude for Knight but yet he wouldn't be there to learn the new system with everyone else? Seems odd.

Either Shams is really sloppy or this is a 2nd "cleanup".

It doesn't make sense to me that he would tweet that unless Knight just had another cleanup.

Here is an article about Knight's surgery. Nothing is really revealed but it does say it's already done and over with. Sham works for that new subscription based company, The Athletic, so it doesn't surprise me that he's trying to limit what he reveals outside of his articles on that site.

I can see that. I can also see Chriss being very good or on the way out the door very quickly. MDA has always seemed to make guys better. He gives players a chance to succeed. However if he becomes lazy I doubt CP3, Harden or Tucker will put up with his nonsense. If he does buy in I can see him playing small ball center. He could really add another dimension to their team.

I really do not know who will be the winner of this trade.

If MDA gets both Knight and Chriss to be productive while getting Melo to contribute for the team, he will be a magician.

The odds have to be in favor of the Rockets. Morey wins a lot of these trades. He really has done a fantastic job.

Well given the top teams of today I am sort of rooting for the Rockets. It is just a phase. I hope MDA and Tucker gets a ring!

I'll take my chances on Holmes and Melton and wave goodbye to Chriss and Knight. They had their chances here.
