Mar. 24—MORGANTOWN — Trinity Christian and Clay-Battelle met for an early-season intracountry matchup on the diamond as the Cee-Bees and Warriors battled on Shilling Field at Mylan Park on a windy Monday evening.
In a game that saw both sides fight back to take the lead after falling behind, Clay-Battelle made the plays necessary down the stretch, including scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to steal a victory over Trinity Christian 7-6.
C-B had three batters with multiple hits in the game, led by Cameron Mercer, who went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Bryson Sanders led TCS going 3 for 3 with a pair of runs and two RBI.
"Getting a win like this one is great early in the season and continues some momentum we've started to build, " C-B head coach John Coombs said. "We've dropped our first game but have turned around with three good wins. I told them after the game tonight that they make it a lot easier to coach when they do what they're capable of doing."
The Cee-Bees wasted no time tallying the game's first run as Austyn Foley brought Mercer home on a fielder's choice to short.
C-B starter Cayden Strosnider earned two quick outs to start the bottom of the first, but a triple by Parker Hopkins that hit the fence gave the Warriors some life at the plate, and they tied the game at one as he scored on an RBI single by Sanders.
Neither team could add to its total in the second, as Fulk and Strosnider settled in on the mound.
But Clay-Battelle got the bats going to open the third inning as Mercer doubled to left field. He advanced to third on a single by Parker Bane, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Foley to take a 2-1 lead.
Another fielder's choice, this time from the bat of Kooper Statler, scored Bane to extend the Cee-Bee lead to 3-1 heading to the bottom half of the third.
Clay-Battelle earned two quick outs, but Sanders hit a two-out single and Fulk earned a walk to again give the Warriors a chance after falling behind in an inning, as they did in the first.
That made way for TCS to take advantage with a single to center field by Thomas Dinkel, scoring Sanders and cutting the lead in half 3-2.
Fulk and Strosnider both left the fourth inning unscathed. Nate Adams relieved Fulk to begin the fifth inning for TCS and kept the momentum going on the mound.
Foley tripled on a bomb to right field that reached the fence, but the Cee-Bees failed to bring him home.
The Warriors took advantage in the bottom of the fifth as Brady Hutson drew a leadoff walk. He stole second, then advanced to third on the ensuing groundball by Hopkins. Sanders produced another single, his third hit of the night, sending Hutson home to knot the game at three.
Fulk hit a groundball but reached safely on an error, giving TCS a runner on first and second. Dinkel stepped up and sent a hard line drive into center field that scored Sanders and gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead.
Fulk advanced to third on the hit by Dinkel, who took second base on the second pitch of the following at-bat by Noah Toler. He laced a hit to right field that brought Fulk and Dinkel around to touch home, swelling the lead 6-3 for Trinity Christian with a four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth.
C-B opened the sixth with a single by Statler, but a pair of strikeouts by Adams shut the door on the comeback attempt as a groundout ended a scoreless offensive half of the sixth for the Cee-Bees.
The Warriors went empty in the bottom of the sixth, and the Cee-Bees opened the seventh on a single by Corey Coen, followed by a walk drawn by Mercer. Bane brought Coen around to score, cutting the lead to 6-4.
C-B loaded the bases, and Ryan Parker drew a walk to cut the TCS lead to one, 6-5.
Noah Toler came in to relieve Adams for the Warriors, but Clay-Battelle scored two runs on a fielder's choice and an overthrow to first for a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
The Warriors managed to put two runners in scoring position but were unable to bring them around to score as the Cee-Bees went home with a one-run victory, 7-6.
