This is going to sound like a gross question but does anyone know if its possible to clean vomit out of a laptop keyboard without hurting the computer? Any suggestions of what kind of cleaning agent to use if it is possible? If not possible to clean, is it easy to replace a laptop keyboard?

Yes there is a story behind this question but its not a funny one and it wasn't my puke or computer.

compressed air maybe.

other than that, you could take out each key and clean behind that, but that's dangerous if you break one.

Replacement is likely.

Its a Gateway, would my friend have to order a new keyboard from them or could she take it somewhere and have a new keyboard installed?

This is a unique situation to be sure. She actually would consider just getting a new computer but she has files on the computer she needs and can't just give up on it. I know her other friends tried to clean it off as best they could but they haven't turned it on yet so no guarantee it works or that all the keys don't stick.

Take it in. You can get a thumb drive to transfer out files if they planned on getting a new computer. Moving files from one computer to another isn't a reason to not get a new computer these days.

The Keys on a laptop keyboard pop right off. Is there any reason why she can't pop them off one row at a time and clean it with some Q-Tips and some Alcohol?

If she does this, just be sure the Laptop is unplugged and the battery is out of the Laptop. Do not put in the battery or plug in the laptop will you're totally certain that it's dry. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to clean, but I have to confess, I have never puked in my laptop. :p

In the future, yes it is possible to clean the keyboard with harming the laptop. Most laptops have a piece at the top right under where the screen is that pops out. There will be a few screws and "tada" the keyboard pops right out.

Then (trust me here) take distilled water and pour it over the keyboard until clean. You can use cloth or a sponge and as much distilled water as needed.

When the keyboard is dry, reinstall it and "tada" it will show no effects of the accident.

Depends on the laptop. The laptop that I have isn't like that.

Ok... vague much? Your laptop isn't like what? Maybe the piece isn't at the top and the screws are in the back, but all laptops have the abilty to remove the keyboard. What makes your laptop different?

Not sure what type of Laptop you have, but many (most?) laptops require almost a complete dis-assembly before the Keyboard can be removed. The Asus A8JS for example (the laptop I have) is not built in the way you describe.

The Dell Inspiron is the same way. complete disassembly.

We have 7 different makes and models and I used to support the laptops for over 100 users in my old job. I'm gonna have to disagree with most. Like I said, most have the panel at the top, but there are some that you have to remove 6 or 7 screws from the bottom (sony's for example and some of the Dells). Either way, I've never found it hard to pull a keyboard and certainly never had to disassemble the whole thing not even for replacing hinges. The Dell's I've worked on that didn't have the top plate only needed the screws removed from the bottom and the keyboard pryed right up w/out removing anything else.

The Asus A8JS is a great example, it's very easy to remove the keyboard. Here's a good set of instructions that someone put together that shows it's only ONE screw removed from the back and the keyboard pops right out without taking anything else apart. I don't know why you think it needs to be completely disassembled?? LINK

Either way, my main point was the ability to use distilled water.

Wow, I have to admit, I was pretty wrong on my laptop. I guess I just didn't know how to do it. Thanks for the link Klod.
