Has anyone seen this film lately? I just watched it for the first time. I think my expectations were too high because I've heard it was a classic and it is a Spielberg film. The special effects were probably cool in 1977, but they look kind of silly now. I enjoyed the acting in the first 2/3 of the movie, but the ending was very long and slow.

I thought it was, and still is a great movie...haven't seen it in awhile, but it still is great to me.

They were likely "groundbreaking" back then.

It sounds like you've seen to many CGI-enhanced flicks to appreciate many older films. :D

I've went to Devil's Tower in Wyoming just to see it because I was so blown away by this movie....

I showed my class the old version of "the Time Machine" which was made in the 1960's and won an Emmy for its special effects. Basically the Mugwi are people in big furry blue jumpsuits. It's amazing how special effects get exponentially better year after year.

No, it's not that. I'm not much into the new star wars movies or matrix. I've been catching up on several of the older films lately and I really enjoyed most of them. I've recently watched Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now,The Bridge on the River Kwai, Raging Bull and a few others. This is the first time I've come across a "classic" that I didn't really like.

Maybe it was just Richard Dreyfuss. I didn't know whether to laugh at him or feel sad about him abandoning his children like he did.
