Wow....this has to be the biggest mesh of stuff in one movie I have seen. Interesting. I hope it's good. Althought anytime the Wachowski's are attached I am suspect. However, this appears to have a fantastic cast and Tom Hanks is notoriously picky about his movies.

A lot can happen after the script, but one good sign is that the directors said they showed David Mitchell (author of Cloud Atlas) the script and said they'd kill the project if he didn't like it.

David Mitchell (author of Cloud Atlas)
I think this is his first book to be adapted into a movie. I haven't read it, but I've read Ghostwritten (his first novel) a while back and thought that would not make a good movie or at least it would be very difficult to turn it into a movie. Several seemingly unrelated story lines that share something in common. I think Cloud Atlas is similar in nature.

A movie that immediately comes to mind is Babel, which I thought was excellent. So it can work, if done properly.

Amazing film, especially the last 90 minutes. Ebert has a great review, saying that its a masterpiece, but impossible to describe. I get the impression that he thinks this film is another film like Hugo that shows a love of cinema. Just in a MUCH different fashion. Keep your thinking caps because you'll need them and don't leave the theater or you'll miss something.

I loooooooooved this movie. Seriously, it was amazing. Go see it if you value Hollywood taking risks. Hell, go see it for 6 unique and interwoven stories. Go see it, because you will never see anything like it again:

Unfortunately, when it was over, the guy in front of me turned around any yelled out into the theater, "Did anyone get it?"

Yeah, that's why it'll never be a hit, right there.

Critics were less than kind, meaning that I am very sure I will like it. It barely got a fresh tomato from RottenTomatoes (63%).

RT is misleading in this case. Critics weren't "meh". They either loved it or hated it. No in between.

My mother in law said "at some point you will want to laugh out loud at the makeup."

Thoughts?

I thought there was one, maybe two, times where the makeup was a huge fail. But it didn't make me want to laugh.

When they turn some of the actors Asian, it is a little weird. And trying to turn Doona Bae into a white woman worked very well in one story line, but didn't look so good in a different one.

Also, Hugo Weaving as a woman just looked like he was in drag. Not sure if that was intentional or not, because that part of the movie was more of a farce anyway.

That being said, there were a couple times when I completely failed to recognize the actor underneath the makeup until someone told me who they were. James D'arcy as the Archivist in the Neo-Seoul story line, and Hugh Grant as the Kona Chief come to mind. And I thought all of Halle Berry's transformations were really well done.

See for yourself...

Agreed with the Archivist and Hugh Grant as the Chief were especially good. I recognized Hugh Grant right away under all that war paint, but I was blown away that he would play that role.

Easily the most recognizable of the actors in all his roles, Tom Hanks' makeup was some of the best.

Worst makeup job? Hugh Grant as Jim Broadbent's brother and Doona Bae as a Victorian-era white woman and daughter to Hugo Weaving. As far as Weaving in drag goes, his performance is really good in the role and seeing as the 2012 segment is more of a comedy anyway, I didn't have a real problem with it.

the Broadbent section was my second favorite of the movie. The one i really didn't care for all that much was probably the future one with Hanks and Berry. Hugo Weaving's character was just too ridiculous for me in that one and i didn't care much about either character in it.

That'd be a fun thing to do: Rank each story from most-to-least favorite:

1. Future Seoul (Bae/Sturgess) - Amazing
2. Present Day UK (Broadbent/Weaving) - Hilarious
3. 1970's California (Berry/Hanks/Grant) - Pretty Good Story
4. Distant Future Hawaii (Hanks/Berry) - Didn't Hate It
5. 1800's Pacific (Sturgess/Hanks) - Ok, I guess
6. 1930's Belgium (Broadbent/Whishaw, D'Arcy) - Kinda blah

i'd probably go with:

1.
2.
3.
5.
6.
4.

Thinking more about it, I love the connections that are drawn between each successive time period:

1) 1800s to 1930s -- The journal
2) 1930s to 1970s -- The Cloud Atlas Sextet
3) 1970s to 2012 -- The mystery novel written by Halle Berry's neighbor kid
4) 2012 to Future Seoul -- The film
5) Future Seoul to Distant Hawaii -- Soonmi

The tattoos on some of the slaves matches the wallpaper in the 1930's house. I think they have a ton of subtle connections that will require multiple viewings to catch.
