Somewhat interesting because someone told me after Brown picked Oregon this might happen. They are saying that Carson is now saying he won't sign in the early period and although he contends he's not openly talking to other teams, he is holding off signing because he wants to see if ASU can sign other talent to be there when he arrives.

Kind of intriguing, he was the one saying he was going to get Jabari Brown to ASU in the first place, but ASU still has a pretty good supply of 2's and 3's, it's really size where they're lacking.

It's probably a better career move to go to UCLA anyways. Howland develops points albeit with what's said to be excruciating micro-management and that team should be pretty loaded in 2011.

That's of course what UCLA fans are hoping would happen. To me I'd be wondering if he'd just follow Brown to Oregon? If he thinks ASU doesn't have the talent to open up the offense as they promised him, would he believe UCLA is going to open up theirs?

ASU is still loaded with 2's and 3's, the question would be do they have enough size. Given that the 2 guys(Anderson and Brown) they wanted were a SF and a SG, it's not obvious to me that Carson is worried so much about the size as the talent level?

If you read Doug Haller today it sounds like Carson is upset over a jersey number, thats ridiculous.

I hope Herb can pull a rabbit out of his hat with Deandre Daniels, I imagine that would entice Carson to stay.

I have to admit I stopped following DD but didn't he enroll at a prepschool?

His people were telling everyone he was fully qualified for D1 but virtually nobody believed him given all the past reports on his transcripts. Is ASU thinking 2011 with him and Carson in the same class?

Carson says ASU promised him #1 so he's unhappy that Hawkins has it now. Does seem a bit odd if they really promised it to him but it is just a number, he said it's his grandmothers favorite number. He also denied he was reopening said he's just waiting for the late signing period to sign, still wants to go to ASU, but then asked if he might look elsewhere if he didn't get #1 he said "that is a possibility."

ASU also got a verbal today from 6'9" Maurice Kirby a class of 2013 C. Seems a bit odd to me, the early verbals haven't exactly panned out for ASU recently?

Let's not kid ourselves, nobody wavers on a commitment over a jersey number. Jahii is either...

a) being a drama queen and doing this for attention

b) has people in his ear telling him to be cautious due to ASU's 2008, 2009, and 2011 recruiting woes and to wait the season to make sure the 2010 class pans out

c) has same or other people in his ear telling to wait to make sure Herb sticks to his word about playing up-tempo before putting ink on the LOI

Either way for a guy who supposedly doesn't play the game Herb has made a lot of sacrifices for this kid. He had better work out.

This situation and the story out today that the NCAA wants to completely do away with the July recruiting period is a pretty interesting connection. Something on the order of 40% of players transfer by the end of their soph year in basketball now according to the story I read today(sounds high but there were a TON of transfers the last 2 years so maybe not if just measured recently). The idea that eliminating the July recruiting period would help that seems misguided to me. The NCAA thinks if schools can't evaluate kids until school starts, they will wait longer to get commitments and thus kids will make better decisions and transfer less.

What I think will really happen is kids will commit earlier because colleges don't want to be recruiting during the school year, they don't want to have coaches missing practices to go recruit, so they will pressure kids to commit earlier, more bad decisions will be made, and there will be even more transfers.

I do agree it's unlikely the real reason here is the jersey. I would suspect that just as Carson was trying to get Brown(and Anderson) to ASU, they're now trying to get him to follow them.

Carson may in fact stay with ASU but it's pretty clear nobody is going to be sure of that until he signs.
