How will he get stronger now which is what he needs, to be ready for OTA's next year.. I never liked this pick much but hoped that Brown would prove me wrong..

I'm sure this has been brought up but this could be a good time to bring in Derrick Brooks to see if he has anything left. Not even sure if he would fit into our scheme but I think it would be worth a shot (especially with injury prone Haggans, Berry, and Chike)

The top two picks being injured does not make me a happy person, especially since those two fill our biggest weaknesses. Wells hopefully will be fine by the regular season, but Brown out for the season? That sucks a big one.

Cardinals outside linebacker Cody Brown suffered several dislocated bones in his wrist last Saturday night against the Chargers and will need surgery, his agent said this morning. Nate Haber, one of Brown's representatives, said the bones were put back into place on Saturday but that his client will need surgery once the swelling decreases. Haber said Brown has been told that recovery time is four to six months. No one from the team is likely to comment until Ken Whisenhunt talks to...

That's not what I wanted to hear.

Several dislocated bones? Yikes. At this point, I'm just hoping for a full recovery.

Between cutting Laboy, losing Harrington from the practice squad and now this, finding a 3-4 OLB under 30 isn't going well, to say the least.

As far as Derrick Brooks goes, I think he's way too small to play in this defense. Especially on the outside.

I wonder if Brooks wouldn't be a better backup for Hayes, though. He might be a real liability in coverage on the outside.

Throw Brooks inside and move Dansby outside when one of the OLB's need a break.

Brooks is even a little small to play ILB here, although he's roughly the same size as Highsmith. I think he's better off finding a team that runs another cover 2 type scheme.

Concerning Brooks, he without a doubt does not fit our 3-4 scheme, inside, outside doesnt matter he would get used and abused. But where he does fit is in a 4-3 D, and according to preseason we still run a lot of 4-3 alignments. Not sure if anyone has taken notice of it yet, but Berry hasnt played any LB yet, and if he has it has been very limited. They are pretty much using Berry exclusively for their 4-3 package as a DE. In that package we may be able to bring in Brooks as a coverage LB and let Okeafer or Haggans take a break.

But not sure how many times we will actually use that package and Brooks would still be the 8th or 9th LB on the roster meaning he will most likely be inactive anyways because your last few player on your active roster have to be able to play special teams. Which is why you dont sign a veteran a this point in time, maybe after the first game when their contract is no longer gauranteed. Our starting 4 OLB's are Okeafer, Haggans, Davis, and Berry, any other OLB will be inactive every game so all you need to find is a capabale special teamer who can play a few snaps if one of the top 4 have to sit out a game or two. So take Brooks and MgGinnest of your lists.

Hobson or a waiver pickup will do just fine as the 5th OLB, anything else is just over kill and a waste of money. Thats if we even keep 5 OLB's. We might keep an extra ILB now. Before I bet the coaches were thinking about keeping 5 OLB's and 3 ILB's, maybe now we keep 4 and 4.

Thanks for clarifying. I figured he was a longshot due to his 10+ years thriving in cover 2 schemes. I still wouldn't mind bringing in a vet after the season starts if the roster is flexible enough

Brooks was a two down LB last year in Tampa Bay, and it's a key reason why he is no longer there. He can't cover.

I was about to say, but Joe touched on it.

Our answer to losing Brown is Victor Hobson.

After having been placed on IR, is the player allowed to participate in on-field practices after being cleared medically?

And you've been a Cardinal fan how long? It sure would be easier to "cool it" if we didn't have the history.
I share your chronic sense of impending doom.

However, the main thrust of my comment was that I have a somewhat hawkish attitude about prematurely believing unsubstantiated reports about the Cardinals - Somers' impeccable credibility nothwithstanding. (I've been burnt too badly in the past).

Kent's original report was based on a "tweet" (from an agent no less!!!). Better safe than sorry.

Regarding the loss of Cody, Harrington, LaBoy etc. - Cody didn't (at this early phase of preseason) seem to be one of those guys about to leap into the spotlight anyway. He came across instead as one of those players who might need a year to make the successful transition from DE to OLB, so - at least for this season - we probably didn't lose too much other than a little depth.

He can attend meetings but no practices. This will hinder his development even more. Chalk it up to a lost season and I was reading an article that Steeler coaches usually don't see production from DE/LB converstions until year 3 in their version of the 3-4.

Brown, meanwhile, will have to deal with losing his rookie season and the valuable learning time he needed for a new position.
“He’s missing a lot of what he needs the most,” defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. “That transition from defensive end in college to outside ’backer in the NFL is a massive one. It’s a year to develop in your eyes and your stances."
