After trading away Jonah Jackson, the Los Angeles Rams found themselves in need of depth on the interior of their offensive line. They went back to a familiar face in free agency, signing Coleman Shelton to a two-year deal to bring him back to L.A. after a season in Chicago.

Steve Avila and Kevin Dotson are locked in as the starting guards and Beaux Limmer appeared to be in line to retain his spot at center, but Shelton may have something to say about that.

The details of Shelton’s contract have been released by Over The Cap and they’re likely an indication of how the Rams view him on the depth chart in 2025. With an annual salary of $6 million per year and a $4.5 million cap hit this season, Shelton is being paid starter-level money.

His $4.5 million cap hit ranks 14th among all NFL centers and his $6 million cash earned in 2025 is tied for 11th. His $6 million fully guaranteed isn’t an insignificant number, an indication that the Rams probably expect him to be their starting center for at least this season.

Of course, this isn't to say Limmer can’t beat him out in training camp. The Rams kept Jackson on the bench last season after giving him a contract that paid him $17 million per year. They certainly won’t be afraid to make Shelton a backup for $6 million if Limmer outplays him.

However, this does seem like a clear indication that the Rams are not totally sold on Limmer remaining the starter. That’s understandable considering he was a sixth-round pick last year and while he played well throughout the season for a rookie, Les Snead and Sean McVay may feel they can improve on the interior by bringing in Shelton.

As always with the Rams, performance will determine a player’s role, not his salary. So we’ll see if Limmer can hold off Shelton this summer. But it’s fairly clear that they think highly of Shelton as a potential starter in the middle.
