As spring sports and weather heat up, College of the Sequoias teams are making their postseason pushes.
The softball team leads the conference, women’s tennis completes a perfect season, and the baseball squad looks to rally into playoff contention.
Meanwhile, swimming and track & field head into major meets to prepare for postseason competition.
Softball
The Giants won a conference doubleheader last week and dropped a non-conference game to San Mateo, the state’s No. 3-ranked team.
Sequoias, 20-8 overall and atop the conference standings with a 5-1 mark, plays three conference games this week with a match-up at Fresno on March 27.
Baseball
COS gets back into conference play this week, playing Taft in a three-game series. The Giants will host the Cougars at 2 p.m. on March 29.
Sequoias stands 12-13 for the season and 5-4 in conference games.
With 15 games remaining, the Giants need a late-season rally to clinch a spot in May's 24-team Northern California playoffs.
Men’s and women's tennis
The Giant women’s team completed an undefeated regular season with a 15-0 record, including 9-0 in conference matches.
The Central Valley Conference tournament is March 27-29 at COS, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Northern California team playoffs begin on April 8, with COS likely to have a first-round home match.
Sequoias’ men’s team finished the regular season 6-6, and 5-4 in conference play. They will also be in the CVC tournament this week.
Swimming and diving
The Giant swim teams will compete in the Hawk Invitational meet on March 28 and 29 at Las Positas College in Livermore.
Standouts last week at the COS three-way meet with Fresno and Clovis, were Azulema Ayon, who placed first in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle; Dylan Hunt, first in 100 and 200 breaststroke; Trent Regier, first in the 100 and 200 butterfly; and Kenzie Hyder, first in the 100 and 500 freestyle.
Track and field
The track teams will compete in the West Coast Relays on March 28 and 29 at Buchanan High School in Fresno.
