Mar. 28—POTSDAM — Freshman Sam Horne tossed a complete-game shutout as SUNY Potsdam's softball team won the second game of the day against Clarkson, 6-0, on Thursday to split a nonconference doubleheader at Clarkson's Scott Field.

Horne allowed five hits while striking out three to earn the win in a five-inning game for the Bears (5-5).

Kiara Lovejoy knocked in the only run SUNY Potsdam would need with a double to right in the top of the fifth, scoring Horne.

Catcher Kelsey Bennett of Hammond then drove in Lovejoy to make it 2-0 against Clarkson (6-8).

SUNY Potsdam scored four times in the top of the sixth as Lovejoy drove in designated player Rebecca Holmes with an infield single. Shortstop Alexys Rosick followed with a two-run single to drive in Lovejoy and Horne.

In the first game, Emma Sabourin went 2-for-3, including a double, and drove in three runs to spark Clarkson to a 9-1 victory on the same field.

Kaya Johnson was 2-for-3 and scored three runs for the Golden Knights and pitcher Bella Hotchkiss picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing one run on three hits and didn't walk a batter.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning, Clarkson scored three runs in the third and four more in the fourth to pull away.

Johnson singled home Shaelee Torres for what proved to be the game-winning run in the third, and Johnson scored on a hit from Elissa Uveino. Devin Fitzpatrick later hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to plate Uveino, making it 4-1. In the fourth, Sabourin ripped a two-run double and Fitzpatrick delivered a two-run single.

Lexie Cottrill doubled in the game for SUNY Potsdam.
