Sam Ehlinger will be suiting up for a team other than the Colts for the first time.

Indianapolis' former backup quarterback is headed to the Broncos on a one-year deal, Fox Sports reported Monday. He'll serve as Sean Payton's third-string quarterback behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.

Ehlinger spent his first four seasons in Indianapolis after the team selected him out of Texas in the sixth round in 2021. He served as the team's emergency third quarterback on game day last season but did not see any game action.

Ehlinger started three games in 2022, with the first two coming after owner Jim Irsay mandated a change from an injured and struggling Matt Ryan and skipped over Nick Foles to go to Ehlinger. Ehlinger struggled enough against the Patriots that interim coach Jeff Saturday went back to Ryan, but Ehlinger then started the season finale when Ryan was benched again and Foles was injured.

The Colts have an opening now for a third quarterback behind Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, who will split reps this offseason as part of a competition to start. The draft could be a spot to replace Ehlinger in the same form that he arrived on Day 3, with several of this year's draft class fitting the developmental backup prototype.

Those options could include Ohio State's Will Howard, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel, Louisville's Tyler Shough, Syracuse's Kyle McCord, Notre Dame's Riley Leonard and Indiana's Kurtis Rourke.

If the Colts want to look into free agency, options could include Trey Lance, Tyler Huntley, Drew Lock and C.J. Beathard.

Given the nature of the competition between Richardson and Jones, and the fact that Jones is on a one-year deal, a lane could exist for this third quarterback to grow into next year's backup.

A rule that went into effect in 2023 allows teams to designate an emergency quarterback on game days who is not among the players designated to play in the game. This player can come from the practice squad, though the Colts have chosen to carry three quarterbacks anyway.

The spot is of more interest in Indianapolis given Richardson's injury history, as he has missed multiple games related to four separate injuries in his first two seasons.
