The Washington Commanders continued their flurry of one-year deals on Saturday, re-signing veteran defensive end Clelin Ferrell for 2025. Last March, Washington signed the Virginia native and former No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft to a one-year deal worth $3.75 million.
The former Clemson star dealt with a knee injury all season but missed only three games and finished with 3.5 sacks. Ferrell was a part of Washington's defensive end rotation and played 41% of the team's defensive snaps. Ferrell was a part of a rotation with Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler Jr., Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Efe Obada.
Fowler will not be back in 2025. He signed a one-year deal to return to the Dallas Cowboys, where he played for two seasons prior to signing with the Commanders last March. Fowler led Washington with 10.5 sacks last season. The Commanders have added defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Eddie Goldman in free agency and could look to next month's NFL draft to add a young edge rusher from what is a deep class.
Ferrell, 27, has 16 career sacks but is more known for his ability to set the edge and defend the run. The terms of Ferrell's new contract were not disclosed.
