Jayden Daniels is the best bargain in football. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft broke records as a rookie, leading the Washington Commanders to their best season in 33 years. The best news was that he did it in the first year of a rookie contract.

The Commanders have Daniels on that rookie deal for three more seasons plus an option year. But let's be real: if Daniels continues on his current trajectory, Washington general manager Adam Peters will do right by Daniels when he's eligible to negotiate an extension after his third season. That gives Peters two years to build a Super Bowl roster around Daniels until he becomes much more expensive.

So, about that extension for Daniels. We've seen contracts around the NFL explode in recent seasons, and we are seeing it this offseason with record-breaking deals for non-quarterbacks like Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett and Cincinnati wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase.

By 2027, the salary cap will be even higher, and prices will continue to go up, especially for young quarterbacks. Can you imagine what Daniels' extension could look like two years from now if he continues progressing?

J.I. Halsell is an NFL salary cap expert, having worked on the player side and the team side. Halsell spent some time in Washington's front office (2007-09) as a salary cap analyst. Halsell is often a guest on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. when the hosts have questions regarding the salary cap or NFL contracts. Halsell was a recent guest on "BMitch & Finlay" where the talk turned to Daniels' next contract.

"I think the magic question is 'does he have a chance to be the first $100 million per-year quarterback?,'" Halsell said. "And it really kind of just depends upon, without getting into all the details, the kind of way you value these deals, new money, average per year, versus the true average per year from the day he signs the deal. That aside, while the cap is growing exponentially year over year, I don't know that he gets to 100, could he get to 90? I think 90 is very plausible. Again, 90 (million) is not the end-all be-all metric, or average per year is not the be-all end-all metric on these deals, it's really what's guaranteed at signing and all those pieces. But I think there's a chance he gets to 90 after year 3 and obviously, they would be very smart, assuming he continues to play at a high level in year 2 and into year 3, it would be very smart to get him extended as soon as he is eligible after his third year."

Wait...J.I. Halsell really told @BMitchandFinlay he thinks Jayden Daniels could be a NINETY million per year QB come 2027??? pic.twitter.com/W0JctU6yzJ

Wow. $90 million. Buffalo Bills QB — and reigning MVP — Josh Allen just received an extension worth $330 million over six years, including a record $250 million guaranteed. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys remains the highest-paid in terms of average annual value ($60 million).

Others will be in line to earn extensions before Daniels, such as C.J Stroud. And players like Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes could get reworked deals to keep them at the top or near the top in quarterback salaries. However, when it's time for Daniels to sign his first extension, we could be be talking record-breaking numbers.

For fans of the Commanders, they're just happy to have a quarterback worthy of a record-breaking deal.
