The Washington Commanders were never moving on from right tackle Andrew Wylie. After a disastrous first season with Washington in 2023, Wylie rebounded in 2024 under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and new offensive line coach Bobby Johnson.

The Commanders' offensive line was much better than anyone imagined in 2024. However, the unit wasn't as strong late in the season, particularly in run blocking. Washington knew it had to upgrade the line in front of quarterback Jayden Daniels, but it had some good pieces in place.

Wylie was due to count $10.4 million against the salary cap in 2024. That's a reasonable number for a starting offensive tackle. Wylie had no guaranteed money remaining in the final year of his contract, though. That changed this week when the Commanders restructured Wylie's contract, adding some guaranteed money and opportunities to add more via incentives. The move was likely done to lower Wylie's 2025 cap number. The new deal hasn't yet been made public.

Even at around $10 million, that's a good number for Wylie. Could the Commanders upgrade? Sure, but they liked what they saw from him last season, as he — and every other returning player — improved under the new coaching staff. Washington's trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil leaves some questions about where Wylie will play next season. Brandon Coleman played left tackle during his rookie season. He is a big part of Washington's future, but he will either play right tackle or left guard. If Coleman moves to right tackle, which many believe he will, Wylie would likely kick inside to play right guard. Remember, right guard Sam Cosmi suffered an ACL injury in the NFC divisional round win over Detroit and will miss at least some of next season.

Wylie played guard for most of his first four seasons in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs. When Cosmi returns, Wylie can become Washington's swing tackle with Cornelius Lucas no longer on the team.

Wylie's contract restructuring was good for all parties involved. He can continue to be an asset to the Commanders at guard.
