The Washington Commanders desperately need help at edge rusher. Most analysts and fans believe the Commanders are almost certain to land a pass rusher with the No. 29 overall pick in next month's 2025 NFL draft.
However, the depth of the edge rusher group in this class could allow Washington to be creative in finding pass rush help. While the Commanders could wait and hope for a talented player like James Pearce Jr. (Tennessee), Mike Green (Marshall), or Donovan Ezeiruaku (Boston College) to fall, Washington general manager Adam Peters and his staff are leaving no stone unturned.
According to NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, the Commanders were present at the University of Miami's pro day this week. No, Washington wasn't there to see quarterback Cam Ward. The Commanders met with edge rusher Tyler Baron.
Pauline said the Commanders met with Baron "at length" on Monday. At 6-foot-5, 258 pounds, Baron has excellent size and length. After spending four seasons at Tennessee, he spent his final collegiate season at Miami in 2024. Baron played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes, tying for the team lead with 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. In four years at Tennessee, two years as a part-time starter and one as a full-time starter, Baron totaled 27 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks.
Baron isn't a projected first-round pick. He could land sometime on Day 2, with many projecting him as a third or fourth-round pick.
What's the knock on Baron?
Pauline noted that Baron's upside is "enormous," but "scouts question if his motor is always running." Pauline believes that if the team that drafts him can get the most out of Baron, he'll be a steal. For the Commanders, Peters should love the odds of head coach Dan Quinn getting the most out of Baron. Quinn has an uncanny ability to reach players and get the most out of them.
If Washington targets Baron, the possibilities are endless with its first-round pick. Ideally, the Commanders can move down and acquire more picks. It will be interesting to see if Washington uses a Top 30 visit on Baron, like it did on UCLA edge Femi Oladejo.
