I spoke with the NFL, yesterday and asked when the Comp Picks for this year's draft would be announced? They told me PROBABLY sometime in the next week. I took that to mean by next Monday, for what it's worth.

It doesn't look good for the Cardinals in the compensatory picks category. Here are the projections I have found:

No comp picks in the third round? I find that very hard to believe. Doesn't sound like too great a source, as I can't recall when no team managed a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Somehow or another the 49ers, Steelers, or Cowpokes will get a 3rd. They always seem to get one!

Exactly. That makes the above mentioned list all the more useless, IMO. NOBODY will know until the list actually comes out. I hate not knowing now, but we just have to play wait and see.

There were no third-round compensatory picks last year. There also were no third-round comp picks in 2000.

Don't mind Stout's typical cranky response, he's been a Cards fan for a long time and that does take its toll on anyone.

Just so everyone knows; AdamJT13 spends a great deal of time projecting the comp picks and has an incredible ability to get 90+ % of them correct. He has done this for at least the past 2 years with these kind of results. Adam also posted an in depth explanation on how comp picks work and how he came up with his results. I'm pretty sure someone on this board posted a link, if not I will do so. It's a long read but a very good one.

Normally new guys buy lunch but Adam has earned a pass due to the work he puts in on the mystery the NFL calls comp picks.

How come Boston, Plummer, Lassiter, and Sanders are not on that list. All were FA and they should of been added.?

If Jeff Blake, Ricky Proehl and Terrel Buckley get their team compensatory picks Plummer, Lassiter, Boston and Sanders have to do the same.

I doubt they will be high but c'mon.

The Cardinals lost three qualifying players (David Boston, Jake Plummer and Frank Sanders) and signed five (Jeff Blake, Dexter Jackson, James Darling, Cameron Spikes and Frank Garcia).

They could get a "net value" comp at the end of the seventh round, but I have them just missing out on one ($14.73 million lost, $7.735 million signed). They're also in line to get the third non-compensatory pick, if that many are added. So they could end up with one or two of the last few picks in the draft, but I don't project them to get any.

I've tried to find the most active forum for every NFL team, and from what I have seen, this is it for the Cardinals.

Lassiter doesn't qualify for the equation, since he signed on June 9 and wasn't tendered a June 1 qualifying offer. Sanders, Plummer and Boston were qualifying free agents, but they were the only three qualifying players the Cardinals lost. The Cardinals signed five qualifying players (Dexter Jackson, Jeff Blake, James Darling, Cameron Spikes and Frank Garcia). To quote the NFL: "The number of picks a team [size=-1]receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four." The Cardinals did not suffer a net loss.

However, teams that don't suffer a net loss can get a seventh-round pick after the normal compensatory picks, if the players they lost "were ranked higher than the ones they signed by a specified point differential" (again quoting the NFL). If the Cardinals get a compensatory pick, it would be one of those late seventh-rounders. The players they lost were ranked higher than the ones they signed, but I don't think it was by a high enough point differential. And as Cardiac mentioned, the Cardinals are in line to get the third non-compensatory pick if the NFL awards only 29 comp picks or less.[/size]

The whole idea of compensatory picks is stupid to begin with. If a team can't keep an unrestricted free agent interested in playing for them then they shouldn't be rewarded for it. If a team has a marquise player that has been a headache such as Terrel Owens and he becomes a free agent they could possibly get a high draft pick for someone they didn't want, couldn't sign and couldn't trade anyway. At the very least all additional picks should be at the end of the draft.
