His last two starts he has not been the same guy. Location is gone, feel for his breaking stuff is gone. I dont know if its just a rough patch or fatigue or... hopefully not, a sign of something worse. 5 of his last 6 starts he has thrown over 100 pitches, he is a few innings away from a career high in innings, ERA well over 5 since August 1st.

I think I'd give him one more start, see if he can patch it together and if he is still struggling I'd play it safe and shut him down.

I agree, he has been a workhorse this year. We are going nowhere fast, give him a break for next year.

I was against what the Nationals did to Strasburg last year. I say ive it another week or two and if they have truly fallen out of the race to shut him down and give the starts to someone else

Good point about Strasburg, I am just going by what I am seeing while Patrick is pitching. He is not the same. Just worried about him.

No one has been more critical of Kirk Gibson as a manager than I. But I support his having handed Corbin the ball every 5th game.

I believe that he is going to do the right thing and make an adjustment now. Two starts show that it is not business as usual. I wonder if Charles Nagy as pitching coach does the planning and runs it by Gibby or if he just serves as an assistant.

Gibby can't show that he is giving up the post-season as long as there is a mathematical chance. But everyone on the planet knows that our D'backs at this time are at best a .500 club. Especially with our weak bullpen and erratic hitting.

I would expect that if Gibson makes any announcement about Corbin, it will be strictly about him.

Get Skaggs or some of the other young studs some September call-up starts and set our sights on next season.

Don't jeopardize Corbin's arm fighting a lost battle.

If the guy can't pitch a full season, then he isn't a real ace anyhow. The only reason I can see to do this is if a prospect has been so awesome, he needs a genuine shot in the rotation when the games matter. Four or five more starts are going to kill his career? Don't think so.

I know the fans are writing off the playoffs.

But.... the A's made up 5 games on the Rangers with 10 to go last year. When you are chasing only one team, which we are in the Reds, that sort of rally is not out of the question.

He pitched:

- 144 innings in 2010
- 160 innings in 2011
- 186 innings in 2012

He's at 182 for 2013. I don't think he's hitting a wall. His inning development has been decent, IMO, for young starter. 200 innings for a 24-year-old is not horrible. That's about right, IMO.

I think you only shut him down if he's experiencing pain.

Miley now in full meltdown mode... Couldn't last 2 innings tonight and got pounded!
This is what a full scale collapse looks like... Ain't pretty!

There's more to it than innings pitched. It's the way he has pitched the last few outings. He's keeping the ball up more and his slider isn't sliding like it did. He doesn't look the same.

He has thrown a ton of sliders this year. That was always a concern as the year progressed. If they don't sit him, which I don't think they will, maybe an extra day of rest between starts may help him recharge.

The main thing is not taking a chance pushing him at this point.

I've heard nothing about his arm being fatigued. If it is, then I agree to put him on the 15 dl.

If his struggle is mental, then shutting him down might damage his confidence and actually make it worse in the long run. He should be pouring over film with the pitching coach looking for differences in mechanics from games in the early part of the year and games lately. Then, going out and trying to fix what is broken.

Unfortunately, and disappointing for D'backs fans, we have now fallen behind Washington in the Wild Card race as well.

We're on a roll -- a downhill roll.

Gibson's inability to plan for the big picture -- every game this season has been a new beginning -- has caught up with him.

Here is some perspective from Gibby taken from an article in yesterday's Republic:

Patrick Corbin gets a chance at a do-over in his next start Friday at San Francisco, the same team that chased him Sunday by posting five runs in five innings.

If the direction of Corbin’s sensational season becoming a tail-end stumble does not change, the Diamondbacks’ plans for his final month might.

“We’ll have some special interest to see how Patrick throws,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “If he struggles again, then we may look how to get him some rest, whether it’s inserting a sixth (starting rotation) guy or there’s a couple other ideas. For sure, that’s one guy we don’t want to push him. He’s got a lot of innings right now and we want to make sure we don’t hurt him.”

Corbin has thrown 182 2 ⁄ 3 innings, just 3 2 ⁄ 3 fewer than he totaled in the minor and major leagues last season. His ERA was at 2.45 this season until his past two starts, when Corbin surrendered 18 hits and 13 earned runs in 10 1 ⁄ 3 innings.

Gibson said Corbin’s ability to hit both sides of the plate for strikes almost has vanished and his change-up arm speed has slowed.

“Last game was all arm side,” Gibson said. “When he went to his glove side, he didn’t get many strikes on the inside corner. His breaking ball, slider had a hard time getting it down and in. When you think of the really good games that he’s pitched, he struck everybody out on sliders that are glove side and they’re breaking sharply down and in. He just didn’t get it there.”

And here is Gibby's take on the rest of the season.

Going young?

One week ago, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson was committed to playing his veterans in the hope of staying in the wild-card race.

But with Arizona slipping further and further behind Cincinnati, Gibson said that he’ll start giving young players like shortstop Chris Owings and third baseman Matt Davidson playing time.

“We’ve played a lot of the same guys but we haven’t been successful so why wouldn’t I utilize some of the new guys up?” Gibson said.

I am surprised that he is being honest with the Press. In the long run, it will help the team. I commend him for that. What will help the team more would be for them to analyze in detail why "we haven't been successful" and decide what personnel moves would be necessary to change that.

Depressing bump...

Corbin, despite struggling mightily was not shut down. Obviously there is no way to know when or how his elbow damage began, but extending his work deep into last season when he had clear signs of fatigue and we were essentially eliminated could not have helped.

OUCH! But you could see it coming.
