Here is some perspective from Gibby taken from an article in yesterday's Republic:
Patrick Corbin gets a chance at a do-over in his next start Friday at San Francisco, the same team that chased him Sunday by posting five runs in five innings.
If the direction of Corbin’s sensational season becoming a tail-end stumble does not change, the Diamondbacks’ plans for his final month might.
“We’ll have some special interest to see how Patrick throws,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “If he struggles again, then we may look how to get him some rest, whether it’s inserting a sixth (starting rotation) guy or there’s a couple other ideas. For sure, that’s one guy we don’t want to push him. He’s got a lot of innings right now and we want to make sure we don’t hurt him.”
Corbin has thrown 182 2 ⁄ 3 innings, just 3 2 ⁄ 3 fewer than he totaled in the minor and major leagues last season. His ERA was at 2.45 this season until his past two starts, when Corbin surrendered 18 hits and 13 earned runs in 10 1 ⁄ 3 innings.
Gibson said Corbin’s ability to hit both sides of the plate for strikes almost has vanished and his change-up arm speed has slowed.
“Last game was all arm side,” Gibson said. “When he went to his glove side, he didn’t get many strikes on the inside corner. His breaking ball, slider had a hard time getting it down and in. When you think of the really good games that he’s pitched, he struck everybody out on sliders that are glove side and they’re breaking sharply down and in. He just didn’t get it there.”
