I have thought about this one for 2 days. Why did the Giants do what they did besides, ........ they wanted Eli ( and I don't know why on that one either).

I'm have the following thoughts on the subject

1. Did the NFL push this one to boost #1 TV market in country?
2. Does Tom Condon have some sort of stranglehold on Giants?
3. Did NFL not want Manning brothers to both be in small markets.
4. Is San Diego franchise in trouble?

I don't know.

Does anyone else?

Well one thing is for sure and thats Archie's dad and his Agent didnt evaluate teh Giants very well, because their offensive line is worse than the Chargers and they dont have a dominate RB to take pressure off of ELI. I like Eli, but the kid is soft and would have done fine in a small market but as soon as the media gets on him for some poor performances in NY he is going to fold like a cheap suit...

Eli was on tv saying he would go to law school instead of play for the chargers....I am not sure what is up with Eli and his parents. I My original thought (which most of the replies I received seemed to disagree with) was that he does not want to be on the west coast..I still think the geographics had alot of do with it... I think if any team west of Kansas City and texas would haven eli he would complained...

FYI..the coach of the chargers and Eli have the same agent...so I cannot imagine the agent had much to do with this..I think it was Eli and his parents.

Does somebody have too much time on their hands. The reason is the Chargers front office sucks, Marty sucks, and Archie had visions of his youngest son getting the crap beat out of him just like it happened to him. Besides, if the Cards had the first pick, Eli would not come here eithier, the only chance we would have would be because of Green. Besides this is the NFL not the NBA!!!

Wally: You really made me think (no puns please). Its a lot more important to the NFL to have "stars" in New York than San Diego. The San Diego franchise is in trouble. Don't be surprised if they end up in Los Angeles.
But since that may take a couple of years than it makes more sense to have Manning in New York. San Diego can get their franchise qb next year as they have two number one picks and the Chargers could be drafting very high again next year.
Not saying that you are right but its interesting!!

Then Archie had better hope the NYG do something about the offensive line play so boy doesn't get beat to death like Collins did this past year. The Giants allowed 44 sack in 2003. Second most in the NFL.

SD? Middle of the pack at 29.

I guess its better to get the crap beat out of you in NYC, the media capital of the world, and get a butt load of endorsements, than to get pummeled in little ole San Diego in obscurity.

I always thought that the reason any sports player wanted to play in NYC was because of the exposure to fame and money you would receive if you were good. A franchise player from NYC will get into the NFL Hall of Fame much faster than a franchise player from Phoenix, and there are all kinds of money to be made by endorsments in a major city.

I don't blame Eli for wanting to play there, it's just that I disagree with how it was done, after all, it is called the "NFL Draft" not "Who Do You Want to Play For."

San Diego is going to suck till they get a new stadium, in San Diego, or LA. Manning's dad didn't want him there while that plays out. The Mannings tried to strong arm the Chargers off the record, but the Chargers wouldn't have it. I predict this move will turn out to be a huge mistake; for now, this Manning will be under the red hot spotlight in a market that will expect greatness for value given up. The other two Mannings were the best players on bad teams. No pressure there.

My conspiracy theory is how do teams like OAK and SD who sign tons of FA every year get so many supp picks. These guys got some nice potential at the end of the draft. Sucks.

as an attorney let me be the first to say that eli is making a big mistake. he should forget about playing professional football and go to law school. he'd have a much longer career, make a tenth of the amount of money (or less), and waste away in an office instead of playing a game outside under the sun. yeah, the threat to go to law school instead of play for the chargers was very real . . . sheesh.

" Negotiations for a new network TV contract that will begin in the 2006 season are expected to heat up this fall. By the time it goes into effect, Eli Manning would be in his third season with a team in the No. 1 media market, and the Giants paid an extremely high price in assuming he'll quickly develop into a superstar clone of his big brother Peyton of the Indianapolis Colts. If Eli is indeed playing at a Peyton-like level in his third year, that could only translate into higher local and national TV ratings in the first season of a new television deal. That certainly would give the NFL an even better bargaining position than it already enjoys as the most popular team sport on television."
