I was surprised when I heard that Kupp has only had two 1000-yard seasons. Of course one was almost 2000 yards but still. His contract isn't unbearable. I could see him going to the Bears or Steelers.

I don't see a team that would be stupid enough to trade an asset for an aging WR who hasn't been healthy in 3 seasons and pay that WR $20M per year.

If you really want Kupp you just wait for him to be cut before his roster bonus is due in mid March.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded for a 6th rounder for example to guarantee his services...

You're not paying him $20 million. You're paying him $12 million in 2025 and, a $5 million roster bonus next off season and then $14 million in salary for 2026. If you cut him after this next season, there is no dead money if you trade for him. All previous bonuses are part of the dead money the Rams take on. If give up a 4th or 5th, it's a potential 1 year rental. If he plays well, then he's worth the 2026 number. I'd take a chance on him for a 4th, but as I said earlier, I guessing the Raiders trade for him.

the Rams owe Kupp a $7.5mm roster bonus on March 15

the salary for 2025 and 2026 is $12.5 and $14.9 - and he is due another $5mm bonus next year in March. For a guy who has appeared in 12 games each of the last two years.

i have a hard time seeing a team pony up draft capital for the contract
Conditional 6th, with an agreed to re-worked contract? (Not advocating for the Cards to get him.)

There is a $7.5M roster bonus due March of 2025 that would travel with him on top of his $12M 2025 salary. So that would Be $19.5M for 2025. The Rams need to move him before the March Option Bonus exercises. Hence why they are looking to trade him immediately.

Then the following year he would cost $19.85M in 2026 if he stays on the roster.

Only of he's trade before March 15th. The bonus stays with the team who paid it. To that point, they probably cut him with a June 1st destination if they can't trade him by them. They only have 3 days into the new league year to do that though.

pre-bonus, IMO Kupp isnt tradable

there is a version where the Rams pay the bonus -- and at that point trading for Kupp means acquiring a one-year rental for $12.5mm -- as it feels unlikely the acquiring team keeps him at $20mm for 2026 unless he has a big season

They'll obviously release him before paying that bonus. That's why they're shopping him right now.

i think thats far and away the most likely

although: any chance of getting some draft pick comp probably means eating that bonus. The Rams may decide paying $7.5 to get a draft pick to be worth it (or maybe better said: 7.5 buys the chance for a draft pick)

I highly doubt they’re gonna pay 7 1/2 million for fourth round draft pick or lower

Yeah. Maybe. Or they eat a portion of it. I'll always remember that the Bucs traded for Jake Plummer in exchange for some kind of salary cap relief back in the day.
