This is in no way a knock on the trade. It was an excellent deal regardless of what I cover here. I think it will be interesting to see what happens with Cooper. The Pats have a history of getting the most out of mediocre linemen. The Cards, on the other hand, have shown little skill in developing lineman. Between DJ and Cooper we should learn quite a bit this season. I'm guessing Cooper stays mediocre. My biggest concern is DJ. If the Cards didn't guess right on him Palmer will be in great jeopardy.

Harry. Plz tell me your views why the Pats didn't pick up the fifth yr option on him. I mean it would've saved them money rather if they resigned him right?

they really did not have time to see him perform in their system when the option was due....
also,...I would guess that they are hoping that being in a contract year will give coop a bit more motivation to learn.

You're probably right but would make sense if they did pick up the option. Or maybe they think they didn't get the better deal in the trade.

Cooper's 5th years option would have been @ $11.9M (guaranteed).

No brainer for the Pats. Even if he had done well with Cardinals, the Cardinals wouldn't have exercised the option at that figure. If he has a good year in NE and fits in---then they will try to sign him to a long-term deal.

Harry---the return of Dante Scarneccia as the Pats' o-line coach could make a huge difference. The Pats have high expectations for Cooper---they think they acquired him at the right time and have the right coach for him.

Well, I for one am not going to devote what little time we all have on this planet to see how Cooper is doing... but I will be paying attention to Chandler Jones :)

Why would they? Cooper hasn't proven to be able to stay healthy at all during his NFL career. $11.9 mil is a lot to risk on a player with a laundry list of injuries in only three seasons of work, including one that cost him an entire season.

I had no idea the option year was 11.9 mil.

Considering that a major need player was sitting there(Shaq Thompson) at a position that is still a need and we take this guy who didn't even dress last season, if Thompson continues to be a beast and Humphries flops, I'm going to slap BASK.

Only two things I need to see..

Cooper # Games Played vs Jones # Games Played
Cooper Sacks Given Up vs Jones Sacks

As long as Jones wins these things.. it's a good trade IMO.

The pick wasn't so much for Cooper as it was for Cyrus Jones (CB Alabama) whom NE took with the pick we gave them.
That's the guy we need to watch for total analysis of this trade. They get him for 3-4 years while we have Chandler for 1 with the option of Franchising him or paying him.

Actually, The Pats took CB Cyrus Jones with their own 2nd round pick, #60.

Then they traded the #61 (from Cardinals) to the Saints for picks #78 (3rd) and #112 (4th).

So the trade was DE Chandler Jones from the Patriots to the Cardinals for G Jonathan Cooper, G/T Joe Thuney (NC St.) and WR Malcolm Mitchell (Georgia).

Continues? When did he start?

I liked Shaq a lot too & hated the Humphries pick, but what has Shaq proved to be so great already?
