If Shawn Marion had become a free agent in any of the last 4 years, he would have gotten a max deal. I have absolutely no doubt of that.

Define "max." Do you mean a deal similar to Stoudemire's extension, which was the maximum Stoudemire could receive? Or do you mean the maximum deal Maron could receive, based on the salary he'd already attained? There is a huge difference between those numbers.

Marion might have gotten a Stoudemire-sized extension. But an extension for his maximum? No chance.

Marion is one of the most overpaid players in the league. Phoenix made a major effort to move him this summer and couldn't find any takers for an all-star. Why? Salary, baby! Also, it is probably unlikely that he would be an all-star if not for Nash's magic. (Same w/ Amare's 1st team NBA.) That's why Nash should have had a 3rd MVP instead of NO-WIN-Ski!

But "NBA execs" don't think any such thing. One exec decided to give Lewis a max deal, and I doubt that even he thinks it was a good idea.

1. One's all it takes, for Lewis or for Marion.
2. IIRC there were only four teams with the cap space to sign Rashard.
3. One of the three other teams traded a top-ten pick in a good draft for Jason Richardson's contract.

The Marion part of the Coro blog was one of many reports about Marion being awfully quiet and upset this season. Obviously we've discussed this, but in my opinion:

1. Marion wants to be on team USA and is jealous, like Arenas, that others are there and he is not - injury or otherwise.

2. He wants the spotlight and is sick of Nash/Amare being the symbol of the Suns.

3. Is sick of trade rumors and thinks he lacks respect.

4. He wants the extention and never got it. Much like Joe, who never got one and forced a sign-n-trade, Marion will do the same or just bolt out of town.

Some of you like Marion and others as I have read are happy he will be gone.

I am not the biggest fan of Marion and would welcome a shooter in his place (e.g. Mike Miller + draft picks + garbage big for $$$ reasons).

If Suns can rid themselves of Marion's 17 million, they can do a sign-n-trade or go out and sign a mid-level guy and simply work with the 2008 draft pick.

It isn't all that bad if Marion leaves --- which I think he will. I believe this is Marion's last year in Phoenix.
