LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball’s efforts recruiting in the transfer portal could see it land the commitment of a guard from St. Bonaventure, as multiplereports Wednesday outlined Melvin Council Jr. has the Jayhawks, Mississippi State, Georgia and Georgia Tech in his top four schools.

Council, listed as a 6-foot-4 and 180-pound senior this past season, played at St. Bonaventure after a previous stop in Division I at Wagner, at which he earned an All-Northeast Conference honor, and Monroe College, at which he earned NJCAA All-America honors. He started all 34 games he played in this past season, while averaging 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game. He wouldn’t bring a recent history of 3-point shooting many would expect KU to be looking for, given he shot 29.9% (40-for-134) from behind the arc, but he would provide experience.

Should Council, an All-Atlantic 10 Conference honoree as well, commit and sign with Kansas, he’d join a Jayhawks team that’s looking to bounce back from disappointing finishes in both the Big 12 Conference and NCAA tournament across the past two seasons. This past season, KU finished 21-13 as it reached the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament and round of 64 of the NCAA tournament. Council’s team finished 22-12, reached the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament and exited in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.

So far during the current transfer portal cycle, Kansas has seen a number of players elect to enter the transfer portal. One of those players, a freshman forward from this past season in Flory Bidunga, decided to return to the Jayhawks. Elsewhere, KU has added the signings of Illinois transfer guard Tre White and Loyola-Chicago transfer guard Jayden Dawson.
