HILLSDALE COUNTY — Despite the early April rain and thunder, weather cleared up on Saturday, April 5 for the first official track event of the spring sports season in Hillsdale County. The Hillsdale-hosted Jack Beilfuss Early Season Invitational brought teams from across the state, including Grand Ledge and Tecumeh, to Baumgarten Stadium for athletes' first shot at breaking through to personal record times, jumps and throws.
In an impressive total, 13 events were won by Hillsdale County teams. Hillsdale Academy won seven events, and Hillsdale and Jonesville won three each.
Hillsdale Academy junior Grayson Rorick won the 1600-meter boys distance event, putting an impressive 4:25.57 time on the board, beating his personal career best before Saturday. Rorick anchored the 4x800-meter boys relay team of Zane Socha, Luke Molenkamp and Timothy Gaebler. They took first with a time of 8:43.91.

Also winning for the Colts boys team was Dawson Scharer. Who was the only County athlete to win twice as an individual. He won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdle races with times of 15.85 seconds and 40.82 seconds, respectively.
Junior Georgia Whalen won the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.11. The junior helped the 4x400 team of Mary Schlueter, Lucy Cote and Caroline Roberts take first with a time of 4:27.14. Junior Anne Gray took first in pole vault with a jump of 7-feet, 6 inches.
The Hillsdale varsity boys track team had a strong showing across the board, led by the 4x400 relay team of senior Miles Brown, sophomores Evan Towne and Cam Arnold, and senior Dominick Coke. The team won the event with a final time of 3:37.21.
Over in the girls sprint events, freshman Effie Heckel made an impressive debut for the Hornets, running a 28.01 in the 200-meter dash to earn first place. The freshman also helped the 4x200 relay team of Emily York, Kiely Kroa and senior Megan Kast (anchor, fourth in the 200-meter) take first place with a time of 1:53.64.
The Jonesville boys track team won two events. Junior Nicholas Fowler earned first in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.4. Sophomore Caleb Blonde took first place in the 800-meter dash, earning a new PR time of 2:01.38 for the event.
The Jonesville girls track team earned a win in the high jump competition, where junior Payton Nichelson took first. Nichelson had a 5-foot clearance height to win the event.
The Hillsdale boys track team had four runners place in the top five of their events, starting with Cam Arnold taking fourth in the 100 (11:57 seconds PR). Dominick Coke and teammate Miles Brown took fourth and fifth in the 400-meter dash with times of 53.57 and 54.28, respectively. Sophomore distance runner Logan Youngman took third in the 1,600 (4:50.03).
Junior Ashton Thornsbury took fourth (16.22 PR) in the 110-meter hurdles. Teammate Evan Towne (44.40) took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Three relay teams placed in the top five. Besides the 4x400 winner, the 4x100 all-freshman team of Evan Hamdan, Nathaniel Portteus, Jordan Calhoun and Nate Moes took fourth place (49.73). The 4x200 team of Cam Arnold, Jonathan Tomasello, Thayden Welch and Jordan Calhoun took fourth (1:41.36).
In the throwing events, senior John Petersen placed third in shot put (43-feet) and fourth in discus (128-feet, 2 inches).
In jumping events, Thornsbury took third in high jump (6-feet). In Pole Vault, junior Carter Myers took fourth (10-feet, 6 inches).
The girls track team, outside their winner, had four runners place in the non-hurdles races. Senior Megan Kast took fourth (28.96) in the 200. Kiely Kroa (1:08.08) and Emily York (1:08.66) took third and fourth respectively in the 400. Senior distance runner Chloe Stalhood placed third in the 1,600 (5:49.63).
In the hurdle events, senior Meredith Bowles took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (55.08). The senior placed just outside the top five in sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Outside their winning 4x200 relay team, the 4x100 team of Jayce Graham, Effie Heckel, Charis Winn and Kast took second with a time of 54.97.
Over in high jump, Kroa took fourth (4-feet, 6 inches).
The Colts boys track team had two runners place in the 3,200-meter race top five. Senior Reece Poole placed second with a time of 10:16.65. Teammate James Rahe ran a 10:44.03 to take fourth.
Senior Alex Richards ended up seventh in the 110-meter hurdles, but Richards would place third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.94 seconds.
The Colts had two 4x800 teams place in the top five, including their winning group. The other group with runners Ryan Miller, Jonah Cuthbert, James Rahe and Henry Lindley took fifth place with a time of 9:11.44. The 4x400 team of Richards, Rorick, Socha and Scharer took fifth with a time of 3:44.49.
Senior Joel Miller placed fourth in shot put (42-feet, 7 inches PR) and fifth in discus (122-feet, 9 inches). Junior Connor Hill placed third in pole vault (11-feet).
For the girls team, Allie Miller (second, 2:42.22) and Anne Gray (fifth, 2:44.97) placed in the 800-meter top five. In the 3,200, sophomore Evelyn Meyer placed third (12:41.38).
Sophomore Lucy Cote, member of the 4x400 winning relay team, took second place in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.42) and the 300 hurdles (52.25).
The 4x800 team of Elizabeth Caspar, Evelyn Meyer, Anne Gray and Allie Miller placed second with a time of 10:51.37.
Eliana Stemme placed third in the pole vault event with a clearance height of 7-feet, a new PR.
Jonesville boys track placed at least one athlete in the top five of the 200, 400, 800 and 1,600-meter races. Besides the winners, Makinlee Packer took fourth in the 200 (24.17 PR). Collin Fucile took fourth in the 1,600 (4:50.57), finishing three seconds ahead of teammate Ashton Potwin (4:53.59), who took fifth.
Earning top three honors in the hurdles was Zander Goodwin, who took third place (16.13 seconds) in the 110-meter hurdles and second (42.78) in the 300-meter hurdles.
The 4x200 relay team of Makinlee Packer, John Milks, Nicholas Fowler and Goodwin took second with a time of 1:35.43. Fowler, Reece Rundquist, Caleb Blonde and Mason Jordan took second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:39.32.
Two boys track athletes had top five finishes in jumping events. Rundquist took fifth (five feet, eight inches) in high jump, and Packer took fifth (18 feet, 5 inches) in long jump.
The Jonesville girls track team had top 10 honorees in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs, led by freshman Brynleigh Griffiths' fourth place finish (2:44.89) in the 800. Their 4x200 relay team of Payton Nichelson, Mile Dunlap, Kira VanKampen and Harper James placed fourth (2:04.39). Nichelson, Griffiths, Dunlap and VanKampen took second in the 4x400 (4:35.57).
The team had a thrower place in the top three of her events. Sophomore Megan Lee took third in shot put with a throw of 28-feet, 10 inches. In discus, she broke her PR with a throw of 95-feet, 9 inches to take second. Teammate and senior Elaina VanBuskirk took fourth with a throw of 77-feet, 8 inches.
Jillian Cook took fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 6 feet.
Each of the Cougar's teams had an athlete place in the top 20 in one event. Sophomore Lina Seay placed 15th in girls shot put with a PR throw of 23-feet, 4 inches. Junior James Johnson took 20th in the boys 110-meter hurdles (22.42).
