Changes worked wonders for Dallas Cowboys guard Davis

OXNARD, Calif. – Making the Pro Bowl last season should have wiped out any notion that Leonard Davis is an underachiever.
That was the rap on Davis after his six years with the Arizona Cardinals. Maybe he was playing out of position at left tackle.

Maybe he was just playing for the Cardinals.

A change of scenery, a club-record $16 million signing bonus and a shift to right guard worked wonders for Davis in his first year with the Cowboys. A former Cowboy, who also played guard, believes Davis could be one of the league's top interior linemen for years to come.

"I think the best thing that ever happened to him was get away from the Cardinals," said Nate Newton, who made six Pro Bowls with the Cowboys during the 1990s.

"This kid won at Texas. He was the No. 2 pick in the [2001] draft. They put him out at left tackle. He didn't do a great job, but he did a nice job. Because of his No. 2 pick status, he never got credit for just doing a nice, solid job."

Still, to this day, it gnaws at Davis that he was labeled, as he said, "a quote-unquote underachiever." Don't be fooled by Davis' huge smile and down-home demeanor. It's clear that what happened in Arizona motivates him.

"Me personally, I don't really understand how I underachieved," Davis said. "I could understand that if I was getting the quarterback hit all the time and missing blocks and all of that. It was just a lot of unrealistic expectations."

So I know that as a team, the Cardinals are a joke until they prove otherwise. I know I've said that countless times over the last couple of decades.

So despite the fact, why does the temperature of my blood still rise?

I see Newton did his research. #2 pick they put him at LT. No we didnt' we put him at RG first, then he played some RT, then he moved to LG but never actually played there before going to to LT.

And everything we were told was that Big WANTED to play LT, because he wanted the LT money. I do think Green messed up with him but I don't think it's fair to say the Cards were just playing him out of position, he just wanted to play in Dallas and that wasn't exactly a secret.

Wish him luck and all but part of his problem here was he seemed to want to play the position that would give him the biggest contract, not help the team the most. That is if all those reports were true quoting him saying he wanted to play LT.

Leonard Davis, you are kinda soft for a guy nicknamed "Big." Explain to me why we shouldn't have high expectations for the guy?

Hilarious. A newspaper quoting Nate Newton as an intelligent voice of reason. Nate Newton proved himself to be one of the dumbest drug runners in cowscum history. Not once, but twice.

Davis did an AWESOME job for the Cowboys last year.

That personal foul for a late hit late in the playoff game vs the Giants was a great play.

So was his false start AT GUARD during the pro bowl.

The guy is elite. Especially since him and 11 other Cowboys went to the Pro Bowl last year.

I hope the Cardinal coaches get wind of this. Maybe put the article up in the locker room before we play the Cowgirls. God I hate the Cowboys.

Especially in the last 10 minutes of a game when your team is down by one score and your team is in red zone.

I'll never ever forget that Rams game at SunDevil when we were getting ready to score with less than 10 seconds left inside the ten and LD jumped offsides and they ran 10 seconds off the clock ending the game without us even taking a snap.

That was the beginning of the end for LD here in Phoenix. At that point it was better for him to move on and the Cardinals to move on. He is a good player but a lot of fans are never going to forgive Mr. Davis for that. It was all down hill after that one.

Wow..sour grapes on this board.

We were stupid to let Davis go. As a professional football organization...shouldn't you know where the best position is for each player, no matter where they are drafted?

I agree. Any time you let a player walk and he makes the Pro Bowl the following year, something's wrong in the thought process with the Card's organization.

I would've held onto Davis. At LEAST until we saw if we could've gotten a draft pick out of the Cowboys, Giants or Skins. I also would've drafted Adrian Peterson having kept Davis.

C'est la vie. I hope we kick their asses October 12th.

That was a horse pucky call. Davis barely moved. Wouldn't have been called against any of the top teams in the NFL.

Unrealistic expectation #1: Don't false start.

Leonard Pope is still starting. Obviously thats nowhere near #1 with the Cards.

I can't wait for the False Start chant when we play them.

For our Leonard or theirs?

It would be hilarious if we only heard those type quotes from guys like Nate Newton instead of just about everyone ever associated with an NFL team and/or a former Cardinal player. Fortunately I think those days are finally ending.

Players actually want to stay in the AZ or come play for the Big Red.

I don't know davis' situation. I know he seemed very upset with the cards when he arrived in dallas. I think both sides have reason to be mad. For whatever reason davis didn't give the cards what they expected and he departed on bad terms. It's only natural that he's going to have some sour grapes and the same feeling are on the other side for cards fans. Nate Newton and the dallas media are like sharks. I don't know that there is a more blood thirsty market when it comes to negative/contreversial material. It may not be the east coast.....but the dallas media can be very annoying.

back to davis....I can't imagine how he played tackle. the guy is big and he has skill, but he's not an nfl OT. I saw the guy trying to pull the other day....he got out a little too far and fell on his face. he's a great interior blocker though.

Let's be fair on this Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in the last ten years stuff. They have been in 3 playoff games and we have only been in one. I am ready for us to get in another one. I hate the Cowboys as much as anyone else on this board too btw.

Yeah, except he wasn't under contract. You would have had to franchise him and then pray someone would offer us good value before he broke our cap. Why bother when everybody knew he wanted to be near his sick Dad in Texas? Bad risk /return on that one.

I agree. and the cowboys kind of blew up last year.....eventhough they showed glimpses of it the year prior. but it's fair to be critical of them because they should of won at least one if not both of the last two playoff games....and they failed. I don't think they were ready to win the SB last year even had they beat NYG....nor do I know that to be the case this year. I think people forget how much youth(and how quickly this team was put together). but this team has to win a playoff game this year. I know the oilers left texas, but no need to bring back that type of playoff tradition.
and the cards loss a decade ago was probably when reality set in for most cowboys fans that it was truly over. eventhough, it had been over for years no one wanted to see the light. so thanks to the cards for that one. the cards were better and they deserved that one.

Whether we should have done something different with Leonard Davis is of no interest to me and has never been. My only comment was aimed at how ludicrous it was for a Texas newspaper to tout any opinion of Nate Newton's as being worthy of respect.

The felons may have more total top caliber football players on their roster than any team in the NFL in the last 20 years or so. Their collective leadership and character is suspect. From owner to head coach to quarterback to some of their of their top stars.

If talent matters most, they ought to be able to go 19-0, barring catastrophic injuries.
