Coyotes Tickets

You know I was seriously thinking of purchasing at least an ice pack for the upcoming season because I have missed hockey and the rules changes they put forth may speed up the game and increase the offense.

But I am starting to hedge on this idea mainly because to-date the Coyotes have done nothing in the free agent market to improve this club. Granted we signed a large part of our roster before the strike so we have less spots to fill but there have been incidents after incidents during this free agent period which has fortified my opinion that the front office doesn't want to put a good product on the ice (i.e. low payroll).

They are going to have to pick it up with some new additions to make this club more competitive on the ice before I commit any finances towards them and I'm not talking about overpaying guys. I'm talking about offering fair market value to improve this club.

I disagree, the thing is - guys are not going for fair market value. The Coyotes have been wise to stay out of this crazy free agent market. Several clubs have really broke the bank and handed out some overly long and overly expensive contracts to guys that just aren't worth that much simply because they desperatly needed to sign bodies. Giving out 4 and 5 year contracts to very average players will almost certainly come back to handicap some of these teams in the near-future. In the link below, many of the GMs realize it as well. I am glad the Coyotes are looking at the big picture and not signing mediocre players to large contracts. The Coyotes have a nearly complete roster, and can afford to sit back until most teams have used up their cap space. Once that happens, Phoenix can find a couple of bargains to round out their few remaining roster slots.

We need a better goalie than Boucher if we are serious about competing. Simple as that.

I really hope we are exploring trade options. We have such a well balanced and deep team, to have it submarined by poor goalie play, I'll be really pissed.

it seems like teams are going out and just spending money on whoever they see.
So I like what the Coyotes are doing in not just going ou and spending on over priced players.

I agree.

Gambo and Ash said today that the Coyotes made an offer to Sean Burke. I don't remember the details, but I think it was for one year at about $1 mil. Burke wants at least two years. I'm sure we'll hear more. Personally, with Khabi off the market, I'm hoping Chicago are looking to deal Thilbault.

Put a solid goalie in net, behind the team as it is now, and it is a playoff contender.

The other teams are making all the news, but the Coyotes may be one of the winners when the dust settles.

Burke at this stage of his career surely isnt any better than Boucher Im afraid. As much as it pains me to say it given I was a huge fan of his, I think he is just about done.

"With Sean Burke now signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the most notable free-agent goalie still available remains Curtis Joseph, which of course means the speculation on where he could end up is increasing.

Several teams are believed interested in "Cujo", including the Phoenix Coyotes, who apparently had attempted to entice Burke back to their club before he signed with the Lightning. The Coyotes still have plenty of cap space available to sign Joseph, especially if his salary demands aren't extravagant. Perhaps the possibility of playing for Wayne Gretzky might also provide incentive for Joseph. "

Honestly, I don't see much evidence here. Sounds like pure speculation. But who knows?

I hope they don't try and bring in Joseph. That guy is way past his prime. His best days are behind him.

Coyotes courting goalie Joseph

Coyotes courting goalie Joseph
By Matt Paulson, Tribune
August 12, 2005

An NHL source confirmed Thursday that the Coyotes, who are in the market for a second goaltender with NHL experience, are interested in Curtis Joseph and that the team has had talks with his agent, Don Meehan.

Joseph, the biggest name free-agent goalie still available, is believed to be seeking between $2 million and $2.5 million per season, but his options are becoming limited. Joseph, 38, was in the running to be a mentor for Marc-Andre Fleury, the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft, in Pittsburgh but lost out when the Penguins acquired Jocelyn Thibault from Chicago on Wednesday.

Tampa Bay (Sean Burke), Chicago (Nikolai Khabibulin) and Philadelphia (Robert Esche) have all recently locked up top goalies, and it is unlikely Joseph will return to Detroit, which has Manny Legace and Chris Osgood in the fold.

Meehan told the Toronto Sun on Wednesday, "I’m talking to a couple of teams, and I hope to have something at the end of the week."

One factor in Phoenix’s favor is Joseph, a two-time All-Star, is familiar with new Coyotes assistant Barry Smith. Both were with the Red Wings the past two seasons.

Joseph, who has a reputation for excelling in the clutch and the postseason, has played for St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto and Detroit and compiled a 396-289-90 record during his 15-year NHL career. Injuries limited him to just 31 games in 2003-04.

If the Coyotes do not sign Joseph, they could also look at working a trade with another team that has a surplus of goalies.

"I have read rumours involving Stumpel to Pitt, but I believe that Stumpel may be headed to the Wild. A source told me last night that the Wild are waiting to sign any free agents until they move Manny Fernandez. The Coyotes are rumored to be trying to get Manny.

Cujo. After waiting for the Leafs to move Belfour, which does not look to be in the cards, Cujo has been in communication with Edmonton, and St. Louis. Detroit may come into the picture soon."

No mention of the Coyotes when talking about Cujo so maybe that is off.

Kolanos and Taffe are back.
With Kolanos now on the books at $600k, we are right at $27M for 20 players. This does not include Taffe, Spiller, Doull, McAllister, or Sjostrom, whose contract value/status is either unlisted or affected by whether they are in the NHL or the AHL. We also at the very least still need to sign Paul Mara who is heading for arbitration, and at least one more goaltender.

"Curtis Joseph is contemplating an offer from the Coyotes, and may sign as early as today."

but later posted:

"according to a source, 'The Coyotes are not interested in CUJO.'"

Who knows. The Coyotes do need a capable second goalie though.
