While its better than Glendale Coyotes, its still awful. I hate when pro teams go for the state name instead of the city name, its just weird and lame to me. The lone exception is the Golden State Warriors just because thats so unique. Otherwise though, State names are for colleges, city names for pro teams.

The Cardinals should've changed their name to something that made sense when they moved here (like the Jets becoming the Coyotes) like the Wrens if they wanted to keep the weak bird theme. The Suns do it right, the Diamondbacks name has always been awful, they should've just done like the Angels and Padres and adopted the previously existing AAA team name, Phoenix Firebirds would've been the best name. Plus those colors and logos kick the snot out of anything the Snakes have ever worn, but now Im off on a tangent.

Its too long of a name, three syllables, they have to shorten it to "D-backs" which sounds like "D-bags", its bad. Firebirds was catchier, simpler and cooler, plus their logos and colors kicked the snot out of any the D'backs have ever had. Additionally, like with the Angels and Padres it would've kept a connected history to Arizona sports.

I understand that the game is played on a diamond and that the snakes are from here though, thanks for that big revelation.

What is wrong with Cardinals? They are a native desert bird....

Well for one its EXTREMELY played out (how many teams called Bears, Wildcats and Cardinals do we need?). Secondly while there are some variants of Cardinals in Arizona they're not exactly super common to the Sonoran desert where the team makes it home. Wrens and roadrunners are far more prevalent.

In general Im for teams changing their names when they change locations. A change of locations is a chance for a fresh start, especially when your organization has decades of losing history under the Cardinal name. Now I dont want them to change it now, its too late, but they should have when they came.

Technically, the Cardinals are named after the color of the first jerseys they got when they were the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898. Hand-me-downs from the Univ of Chicago. They were faded old uniforms that looked "Cardinal" red

If you've been here long enough then you'd know that many were Phoenix Giants fans and preferred those days. Phoenix Firebirds? Nah. Sounds minor league for a reason. Regardless, the Giants/Firebirds were a San Francisco Giants affiliate - not sure you'd want to name your pro team after a future division opponent's minor league team...

Im fully aware that they used to be the Phoenix Giants.

Like I said ,the Padres and Angels both kept minor league team names and it worked just fine. Not wanting to name your team after a future division opponents former minor league team is a really bizarre line of thinking. The old Angels and Padres teams were affiliated with someone else too, who cares?

The Firebirds colors were the colors of the State Flag, the unis and logo were great, and the name had a nice alliteration sound to it.

Its a stance on immigration. They want the whole state to be known as an illegal immigration hub, not just PHX.

Are you calling the naming of teams after birds weak ?

Or Cardinals weak ?

Cause Cardinals, as far as birds go, are bad-asses. They defend their homes to the death, and then some.

That being said you make some good points about the whole name thing.

When the Cards came to town, was hoping they'd adopt the Rattlers name/colors. Best name/colors locally by far.

The Rattlers didn't exist until 4 years after the Cardinals moved here.

In retrospect, I was actually thinking of the D-Backs. I think I saw something at a Suns game many years ago with the colors and logo, and thought it was for the new baseball team.

Those colors and unis were AWFUL. And they changed often. When I was a kid I remember them having an Astros-awful mixture of red and orange. Hideous!

Red, yellow and blue are awful? Thats a pretty classic combo, its nothing weird or new school like purple and turquoise. I remember the other weird colors the Firebirds had but I was referring to that grouping you showed there. Having the team colors be the colors of the state flag was slick and really cool.

Considering the Cardinals have been the Cardinals for over 100 years now I can understand why they didn't change it no matter how much they had lost. They were the original, so why should they change? I think Firebirds sounds like a name for a T-ball team. Then again, the skill level of the Dbacks recently is probably not much better than a Tball team, but I digress...

If its any consolation, while they were still building the stadium, they had a public poll to name the team and the Diamondbacks were very nearly named the Arizona Cacti.

And no, I'm not kidding.

The name change is a term that Glendale has put into it's agreement with potential buyers. Name won't be changed until:

1) Somebody actually completes the sale and then starts the name change process

2) NHL approves the name change -- which can take up to a year.

They will be the Phoenix Coyotes next season. They may be the Arizona Coyotes in 2011, or Winnipeg Jets, or Kansas City Blades. :)

Phoenix Giants had a longer tradition, but of course the longest traditional name for the franchise was the Seals. The Phoenix Firebirds cap was one of the best-selling minor league caps at one time, so there was definitely some appeal. And in the name, not only is there alliteration, but it's synonymous, like the IL's Buffalo Bisons.

Diamondbacks is okay, but it begs shortening, and "D-backs" is pretty bad. It's not an affectionate shortening like the Jays, Sox, Cards, Pats, Pack, Leafs, Bucs, Niners, etc. etc. As a Suns fan I had no problem with the purple, but the teal was too much of a fad. And yet the switch away from the only major league championship colors the state has...in retrospect I think it was a bad mistake, much as I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I don't remember wanting it to be Firebirds at the time, but also in retrospect I think Firebirds would have been better. Suns, Wranglers, Firebirds, Roadrunners, Rattlers, Coyotes...every single one of those names is better than Diamondbacks to me. (I left the Cards off because being founded in 1898 trumps any name debate for me.)

But I wish every one of them went by Phoenix. I get the Minnesota Twins because they really are the twin cities. Phoenix is the metro area, and that's the way the rest of the country looks at it. It's not a slight to the other cities.
