COYOTES TO PLAY PRESEASON GAME AGAINST FLAMES IN WINNIPEG

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monday, May 12, 2008

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes will play the Calgary Flames at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. in a preseason game.

The game will mark the Coyotes’ third visit to Winnipeg since moving to Phoenix in 1996. The Coyotes played the Toronto Maple Leafs in a preseason game at the MTS Centre last year.

Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan played the 1995-96 season in a Winnipeg Jets’ uniform after being selected by the organization in the first round (7th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. Coyotes’ Equipment Manager Stan Wilson and Massage Therapist Jukka Nieminen have also been members of the organization since the team played in Winnipeg.

The Coyotes’ complete 2008-09 preseason schedule will be released at a later date.

Nice to see the Coyotes still paying a little respect to their history. I think it would be neat to see them play in the old Jets jerseys once a year during this pre-season game.

Does anyone know who the fans were cheering for last year? I'm sure there were a lot of Leafs fans at the game anyway, but Winnipeg is still pretty bitter about losing the Jets to a market that is largely indifferent to hockey (no offense to the Coyotes fans, who in my experience are pretty hardcore).

The Avalanche's return to Quebec City was pretty emotional, but that was especially because the city had quite a love affair with the roster that ended up leaving, and Sakic etc. always showed great respect to the city.

Don't know about recent events, but I thought I remembered the Jets fans use to fill their old arena to watch the Coyotes playoff games.

When I went to a Coyotes/Flames game here in Calgary this past year there were plenty of people still wearing their Jets jerseys and shirts. I'm sure Winnipeg will be rooting for the Yotes.
