Cutler to throw a wrench into the draft......to the Cardinals gain?

It appears that Jay Cutler's performance during the run up to the draft will have him finish as a sure fire top 5 pick. Questions about his Senior Bowl "decision making" are bogus.....as a scout told me recently, play calling during this game is 100% a coaches decision.

What happens now?

Rumors that the Texans will trade down become more likely as teams that are in need of a QB (NO; TN;NYJ and OAK) jockey for position in the "Cutler sweeps". He may actually become the #1 QB taken (and this is not just Mike Mayock's opinion). I can see the Jets trading up to #1 to make sure that TN doesn't take him at #3.

NO will stay at #2, content that Leinart is their answer. Of all the teams interested in a QB, TN appear most likely to see Vince Young as their QBOF, but if Reggie Bush drops to #3, they will pass on a QB. Al Davis is said to be "in love" with Vince Young so he'll be taken before we draft.

Of course, the net of all this is that a player that might have been unavailable to us at #10, will drop into our laps. I can see Vernon Davis in a Lions uniform (they could use a TE to round out their offense); Ngata in a Bills uniform (they still need to replace Pat Williams); AJ Hawk in a SF uniform (Julian Peterson is gone in FA).......the various scenarios are mind boggling.

Agree. It looks pretty much for sure that the three qbs (Leinart, Cutler & Young) will be taken in the top five picks.

Cards mostly likely will find the following there at #10 when we pick:
DB Huff, DB J. Williams, LB Greenway, RB Lendale White, RB DeAngelo Williams, maybe TE Veron Davis, and every OL except Ferguson.

Who will be the BPA for the Cards??

DeAngelo Williams was always going to be available at #10. If we read into Green's comments about not giving up on Arrington (and I'm firmly in this camp), then we can logically assume that Williams is not on our radar screen.

Agree, just put his name amongst others that are potentials.

BPA at #10

IMO, it's probably between Greenway and Simms. I thought that Vernon Davis would also be in the mix but his combine results probably mean he'll go in the top nine. If he's available then I see it as a choice the team will make between offense and defense. I hope it's offense because I can see Davis having a big impact on the running game. It would also mean that Warner, if healthy (a big if) will have a monster year.

I cant imagine the Jets trading up. they would have to give up entirely too much and they are jettisoning players as we speak. Plus they are in cap hell. Maybe it helps a QB-VY- fall to #10, but I highly doubt the Jets make any aggressive moves this year.

Some of the stuff I have read suggests that NO has Cutler and Leinart dead even on their board. Aparently Sean Payton loves Cutler and his arm strength.

Interesting thought process:

#1 Houston - RB Reggie Bush
#2 New Orleans - QB Matt Leinart
#3 Tennessee - QB Vince Young
#4 NYJ - QB Jay Cutler
#5 Green Bay - DE Mario Williams
#6 San Francisco - LB AJ Hawk
#7 Oakland - DT Halogi Ngata
#8 Buffalo Bills - OT D'Brickshaw Ferguson

I say this is interesting because Ferguson could actually fall out to #8 because of team needs/interests, if this happens then both SF and Oak could be possible trade partners to get him without having to break the bank, either in money (not a top 5 pick) or in compensation (trade of 1st and probably our 3rd might very well do it.)

Maybe thats why Denny was only talking about getting a C/G in free agency because he feels this is something that can be pulled off?

I was on the "Draft Cutler" Bandwagon early, but top-5 seems too high to even me. Drafting him at 10 was on the fringe of how high I think he probably ought to go.

It's a shame he's going to be taken so high. I still really hope the Cards can take him at 10.

Wasn't Aaron Rodgers not supposed to drop any lower than 10 last year? And every year i hear about how Al Davis is "in love" with some prospect but that guy never is the one who he drafts. I said awhile back the guy who i think can drop to the Cards is AJ Hawk. Also Ferguson will not drop out of the top 6. LT's and pass rushing DE's are the most coveted players after QB's.

I can see Hawk falling to the Cards at #10. Teams are iffy about drafting LBs that high. While I'd pass on Greenway, I'd take Hawk over Davis and maybe (maybe) Vince Young. But probably not Young.

Uh, have you seen him play? :D

Sorry. Carry on.

There is a lot of speculation on some of the TV sports shows the Jets wanting to trade up and that Houston may want to trade down. Listening to their points I will not at all be surprised to see the Jets and Houston do a deal. Houston has many many needs and a RB is not going to solve them all.

And D'Brickashaw at #4 would be perfect for them.

Wouldn't that be ironic if the "you haven't seen him play" arguement was now cast at people who don't think he should go top-5?

That sounds very feasible.

If Davis falls below Oakland, we may have a shot at him at 10. The #6 pick that San Fran has will be the wildcard.

I would. Because then we'd have to play against Michael Huff every year.

I thought Cutler was supposed to be more of a scrawny Plummer type player. The kid is big and he has an even bigger arm. I'm impressed with what I've seen of him at the combine. He looks to be a legit top 10 pick.

Is OAK really looking for a QB? I realize that Kerry Collins isn't a franchise QB. But he's a decent enough QB to lead a team to a SB (as he's done already). He's not that old either. I don't see why OAK would waste a first round pick on a QB when they have a serviceable (though not great) one now.

Not to mention a pretty good prospect in Walter behind him.

He throws a lot of INT's, and makes a lot of mistakes.

He started off good last year (10/2 TD/INT ratio), but faded at the end.

But my point is that a rookie is going to be even worse. And the 4-12 Raiders need help in a lot of places, not just QB. Get help in those other areas first, then deal with the QB situation.

OTOH, he's a huge cap hit ($9M or so) to the Raiders. The local papers say that he'll be a goner pretty soon merely for cap reasons.
